I have read this book from cover to cover and used many of the examples in some of my development. There are errors in the editing to be sure. For the most part most are minor e.g. links that end with .htm instead of .html will not work or if you create the database in mySQL, in my case on a Linux platform there are errors you will run into. These errors are limited to making sure you observe the case of the letters in creating and quering your database. This book is not for the beginner. It teaches a systematic approach to building an ecommerce web site using jsp's and mysql. The reason for the 5 star rating is this book makes you go out of the box to learn ant, turbine and other opensource packages to build a working e-commmerce web site. Personally I do not like to put java code int an html page = jsp's ... but this book offers sound eamples and good advice. One of the better practical but certainly not perfect books I've bought.

I picked up this book as a reference for integrating our PHP and MySQL designs with JSP pages. However the author sticks to a single fundamental method of JSP development for MySQL which is using Apache's Jakarta Turbine classes. No information is given as to the other mechanisms available to utilize MySQL with Java such as MySQL Connector/J or Resin JDBC. I believe this book is a very shortsighted approach to the many tools available in the Java and JSP world. I think the Turbine approach is fine, but should maybe have been a later chapter not most of the book. We developed our entire web site without the use of Turbine.Some discussion is given to strategies with JNDI and LDAP, as well as EJB. There is also a healthy discussion of XML which I believe would be better suited for an XML book, but serves as nothing more than filler here, which could have been used to expand upon the other methods of JDBC.I would have given this book three stars, but several errors in the code examples always bring down quality by at least one star. I expect a book written by a developer for the purpose of instruction to be error free in all code examples.All in all the book appears to be a step by step tutorial to building a program according to the developer's linear scheme, rather than a comprehensive discussion of all the options available to a JSP/Servlet developer integrating with MySQL. Sadly this really is the only book available on the subject at this time.

I purchased this book in the hopes that it would provide a JSP newby like myself more coding examples than "Web Development with Java Server Pages" (Fields, Kolb) did. While the highly-revered Fields & Kolb book does a commendable job of explaining concepts, I always thought it was a bit light in content when it came to explaining how to get an application server and database up and running. (I'm primarily a front-end developer with limited Java and DB experience.)"MySQL and JSP Web Applications" takes a different approach. It assumes you are already somewhat familiar with programming and database concepts (the author mentions this in the introduction), and jumps right in to topics like obtaining, installing, and configuring Apache Tomcat, Ant, and MySQL. After a cursory overview of JSP and SQL, we are treated to a nice overview of the role of functional requirements in application design. Very nice stuff here. After that, we dive headfirst into the design and development of a fictitious e-commerce site with shopping cart.This book makes a great complement to the Fields/Kolb book. Unfortunately, there are some frustrating anomalies in the text (mostly in the installation / configuration sections) that seemed to have slipped by the technical editors. Still, the code examples and functional requirements discussion make it all worth the price of admission. A highly readable text, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get up and running with database-driven applications using JSP.

I was encouraged when I first started reading this book, but soon I grew disappointed. The book is peppered with useful tips here and there, but in general it's too linear, as an earlier review mentioned. The book is more of a recipe for a web app than a general guide, and it wastes too much space on design process. But worse than that, it is fraught with errors, as if edited by someone who didn't understand the material. Letters have been dropped from words, referenced figures don't show what the referencing text says, there are errors in XML examples. A funny example is on the "In This Chapter" sidebar on the opening page of Chapter 2 where one of the bullet items is "Bean Resistence". More power to the beans! He meant "Bean Persistence", but hey, if you're going to get it wrong, at least spell it right. :)

FIVE STARS!!!! (Though it deserves ten!)I've lived along coasts all my life. I grew up peering into the tidepools of the Pacific, looking over the edge of docks, and wandering along the West Coast's beaches from San Diego to the San Juans. I've spent the last 30 years on the Gulf Coast with visits to the southern Atlantic beaches. Beachcombing is one of my great joys, and my shelves are full of guides to flora and fauna. When the Witherington's guide arrived yesterday, I sat down with it...and by the end of the evening, I'd read it cover to cover. I'll be tucking it in my beach bag, and using it as a constant companion. It's just that good. What sets this guide apart from others is its clear organization, graphic clarity, conversational tone, and concise information-packed descriptions.If you live in Florida and love the beach, buy this book. You will learn about all the forces that shape the beach environment, from tides and weather to human incursions. AND you'll find a clearly illustrated comprehensive guide to virtually everything you could discover washed up in, on or near the sand, along the inner and outer coasts. If you've ever picked up a bit of flotsam, or stooped over a mysterious blob on the beach, and wondered, "What is this?", this guide will tell you. Dr. Witherington's background in biology zoology is apparent, as he provides fascinating insights in every entry. Ms. Witherington's design and illustrations make it a visual feast.This is the second edition. I hope the Witheringtons will continue to revise and update this gem. Perhaps future editions will tell us about the long term effects of the Deepwater Horizon spill, and give us more beach quests for Northwest Florida.

This book doesn't really need my 5-star review added to it, it already has plenty. But it's nice to be able to review a quality product, there aren't many out there! This book is seriously great - it is the only book I've ever read that really answers the questions of curious beach-going minds. Because of the glossy attractive look of the book, I was not expecting it to have much substance - nearly all books like this give up content for pretty pictures and rather surface obvious facts for casual readers. But this book has beautiful photos, and really interesting and actually pretty detailed content, too! I bought about 10 books on Florida beaches, flora, and fauna - some which were supposedly much more detailed and had no nice photos in them - and yet this was the one book that helped me identify some plants and a bird I could not get a good description of in any of the others. The details go beyond simple identification too, including fun facts and useful info if you encounter them. Not at all what I was expecting, for what I thought was yet another "tourist book."I really love that this book has photos and explanations of the things curious people wonder about but don't know how to ask, things no other book would bother to talk about: beach junk. There is a whole section on the random ways that people affect oceans and beaches, and the way the ocean affects those things people leave behind. So many times I see pieces of unidentified "stuff" on the beach, and this helped put names to it, and explained how these things affect our environment (and how the ocean changes them - like for instance sea glass). Every kind of weird or stupid question you might be tempted to ask about how life on the shore works is answered in this book, and it even covers things you might not expect, like invasive species found in Florida (that also happen to affect the beach). It's also a really fun read for a guide book, and really attractive and interesting to thumb through. I own thousands of books, and this is one of the most enjoyable and satisfying I've bought. It is not a definitive volume like a textbook might be, but it is really comprehensive and goes above and beyond for what it is supposed to be. And when you are too tired to read any of the information, the photos are nice to flip through as you dream away about being by the sea. Every region of this country's shorelines should have a version of this book made for it - I would bet each distinct area would be really fascinating if handled in this same fun and thorough manner.

This is the perfect book for those who love exploring Florida's beaches and want to learn more about what they find. As a Wisconsin resident, I don't see the ocean much, so when I do I am inspired by the sand and water. I also enjoy immersing myself in nature to get a feel for life and all it has to offer. In addition, I research the heck out of a place before and after I visit to fully understand everything it has to offer. As a result, this book is perfect for the Florida beach comber that doesn't want to miss out on something special.

This is a wonderful, easy to use, guide for beachcombers. The pictures are excellent and the organization intuitive. One minor problem: paper is not waterproof and it would take a real beating if you used it right on the shoreline. I came to using it after beachcombing with either pictures (preferred) or specimens. We visit beaches in southwest Florida primarily and almost everything we observed on the beach was in this book.

We are always finding shells, fish, and other creatures that we need to identify. If you are a homeschool family in Florida or planning a trip this is a fantastic source!The photographs are incredibly detailed and sharp. Great for visual learners. I also love all the interesting facts that are added to each page.

Please by Barron's instead.1) This book DOES NOT cover everything you need to know. For example, you should know Graham's Law of Effusion (that showed up on like every single practice test I took as well as the real test), which this book doesn't cover.2) The practice tests (minus the last one) were WAY TOO EASY. The actual test was like 10x harder. I finished the practice tests with like 15-20 min to spare but on the actual test I basically ran out of time3) Barron's does over prepare you, but you can tell what info you need and you don't need to know on Barron's. Tbh, you should probably know everything on Princeton and then some, so I think purchasing both will be a good idea.Some other things you should know if you're planning on taking SAT Chemistry with just this book:How to read a manometerHow to find the molar mass of a gasHow to predict products with only reactants givenHow to detect the presence of different gases/solids - i.e., the splint test for oxygenColors of the transition metals in solution(There's probably more that you need to know, but these are the only ones I can think of off of the top of my head)

PROS:1. The section by section explanations are clear and well done.2. Besides a small caveat (mentioned below) I think that the practice tests are probably the best/ most on-the-ball in terms of what's actually on the SAT II chemistry test itself.CONS:1. Only has three full-length practice tests (compared to say, the Barron's, which has four, and is of similar quality)2. Sometimes veers heavily into trivia (a whole section of the practice test was on biology stuff like nucleic acids, proteins etc which is very rare for the actual test itself... what is the third most abundant gas in the atmosphere when I can see them *maybe* asking the first or second on the actual SAT II)3. This is minor, but if you go through the whole book, the explanations will start to get irritating as the number of times they say "divide and conquer" to explain the true/false/correct explanation thing will get tiresomeIn terms of the SAT II Chemistry options out there:a) Kaplan is WAY too easy in terms of the test bank/practice tests and, in my opinion, good for foundations review and/or confidence boostingb) the Official College Board one is, of course, great, but only gives you ONE practice test for Chemistry and really no subject reviewc) It's a toss up between Princeton and Barron's in terms of which is the best. I feel like the Barron's has questions that are almost a little too hard (or emphasize memorizing things that aren't as commonly tested, like heat of fusion constants that aren't provided), but Barron's gives you four practice tests whereas Princeton gives you three. They both have diagnostic tests and decent topic by topic review... so it comes down to whether you'd rather have one extra practice test (Barron's) or are used to the Princeton method (if you've bought other ones).** You can find additional review questions online for free via sparknotes, but they have some errors, and there are also like 20 free questions provided by College Board online...

Really good textbook. All the topics on the actual test are well explained. The book is very organized and easy to understand. However, there are not many practice tests in this textbook, so I would recommend buying this alongside Barron's books as well, as they provide many practice tests in their textbooks. Nonetheless, Barron's is definitely the textbook I would recommend to you if you are looking to prepare for the SAT Chemistry Test. I have yet to get my test results back, but I can assure you that this textbook helped me to feel more confident and prepared for the actual test.

This was such a helpful tool in learning all of the material that I needed to learn. I took a preliminary test before studying anything and scored a 540. After I went through this book and studied all of the material I took the actual test I scored a 740. Not a perfect score I know but I was learning all the content that my high school course left out- which was a lot. Very pleased, would recommend. Practice tests seemed to represent the actual test very well.

This book really annoyed me. The explanations in it are well organized and very comprehensive and that's great. But it lacks some of the material. As an international student who had to make up for some holes because our education systems teach different things in biology, I relied on this book, only to later find out I missed some vital concepts that weren't in it. I got a 740, but part of it was because of my previous knowledge. Bottom line: you can do well enough with this book; I definitely find the Barron's more boring and harder to read; but if you want to be as ready as you can for the test, either ditch this one or combine it with learning from the Barron's.

Book represents the actual test very well. Taught me the right things and asked the questions in the right way.I bought Barron’s too and it had some of the same information but lacked focus or depth in the right spots.

Charlie Llewellin moved to Austin from the UK in 1991 and became involved in the city's music scene, playing in bands and working for the South by Southwest music festival. This is a great guidebook. It feels a little less well-organized than the 60 Hikes (Houston) version I had some years ago, but the descriptions seem right on and it's very thorough. I just moved to Austin and have used this book to find several great hiking spots already!

About the Author

Chuck Collins is a researcher, campaigner, storyteller, and writer based at the Institute for Policy Studies where he co-edits Inequality.org. He has written extensively on wealth inequality in previous books like 99 to 1, Wealth and Our Commonwealth (with Bill Gates Sr.), and Economic Apartheid in America as well as in The Nation, The American Prospect, and numerous other magazines and news outlets. Collins grew up in the 1 percent as the great grandson of meatpacker Oscar Mayer, but at age 26 he gave away his inheritance. He has been working to reduce inequality and strengthen communities since 1982 and in the process has cofounded numerous initiatives, including Wealth for the Common Good (now merged with the Patriotic Millionaires), United for a Fair Economy, and Divest-Invest. Chuck Collins is a hero. He has put his money where his mouth is: he rejected extreme inherited wealth in favor of working for income, wealth, and tax fairness for all citizens. In this book he discusses the myriad ways that the wealthy, White males, and all US citizens were born with incredible advantages that others don't have -- and that makes his success as a member of the 1% (and also White and male) has made any home run he might achieve not that difficult to predict -- after all, he was born on third base!He points out the various ways that police practices, sentences given by judges, hostility to efforts to redress racial bias by legislators, and numerous laws (especially immigration laws and punitive prison sentences for drug possession) have all created a permanent underclass that cannot dig out since they are denied decent education, mentoring, easy access to voting, and opportunities fo employment and internships. He suggests many ideas for widening opportunities,

This is a fantastic book! My aunt and uncle gave it to me for a birthday present. So glad they did! In a world where the rich game the system further and further to their benefit, using money, power, influence and attorneys to change the rules of the system, it's nice to see a compassionate man born on the silver-spoon side of the tracks, with the perspective to see ways both the 99%, AND, those in the 1% with a heart, can make this inequity stop, and perhaps even change direction one day.

VERY interesting "read" and should be read by everyone. I'd like to know what ideas or plans of action have come about convincing 1%ers into giving up their perceived power. How does one even start the conversation about inequality without making those more fortunate feel guilty?

I think the title, as well as the main premise of the book initially put me off, but after hearing what Collins has to say (and having the privilege of hearing him speak last weekend) I think I am on board with this message. Coming from the perspective of a man born into wealth who has tried to convert that wealth into social good and fight for equality, Collins argues that we can make things work by reforming our current democratic and capitalist systems, but only in a peaceful way if we engage the wealthy and work across class divisions. Reading about the exploits and excesses of the wealthy admittedly does make it difficult to imagine there is anything worthwhile to be gained from working with them, but the book does a good job of telling stories of times when this kind of collaboration has resulted in change for the better. This is also unfortunately one of the weaknesses of this book as the latter half drags a bit describing examples one after another. This book is the same as "The Lost Art of Drawing the Line". So, I have reviewed both. And, have copied this review in the book under that book title. Yes, we need common good. And, we need judgment restored. But, for that to happen, we must have a moral people. We can only have the concept of common good, if we have a moral people. As morality breaks down, so does the concept of the common good. And, when there is an immoral people in control, the common good can be turned into a means to an end.The book is well written. But, the conclusions wrong in certain cases, especially in granting more authority to judges. Judges already have absolute immunity for complete incompetency, which, in most cases, is what takes place in courtrooms across America, daily. Further, judges wield nearly absolute authority in the courtroom. Absolute immunity + Absolute authority = Complete incompetency + Judicial Bribery (Subtle and Gross) Yes, lawsuits are an issue. Yes, attorneys tax America by seedy legal practices. And, attorneys are allowed to practice fraud by a rogue judiciary. The author believes in the moral authority of judges, and that greater judicial discretion is needed to dismiss "frivolous" cases. From my perspective, granting judges more authority would threaten America's underlying stability even further. No, we must have accountability for decisions made. And, we must hold lawyers and judges accountable for telling the truth. Lying is a common practice. Perjury profitable. In Secret Corruption, which exposes the massive scale of the damage done by the legal system to our nation. But, does not place more faith in the people running the system. Rather, I believe, We the People, must have a voice in governing the system, and holding those in it accountable for their actions. Yes, on author's issues of discerning right and wrong. No, on author's solution: greater judicial authority and discretion.This book is well written. Definitely 4 stars. I like the title "The Collapse of the Common Good" more than "The Lost Art of Drawing the Line".

Every politician, every lawyer, every judge, and especially every citizen in America should read this book. It explains clearly and concisely how bad laws and frivolous lawsuits are undermining our country. Everything has to have warning labels, everything has to be dumbed down, anything remotely dangerous (such as the teeter-totter or playground slide) has to be eliminated, and teachers aren't allowed to punish bad kids for fear of being sued. Government unions make it impossible to fire incompetent workers, and anti-discrimination laws cause the very discrimination that they are supposed to prevent. After reading this book, you will understand better why government, corporations, and society are not working as good as they should. How can they, with the guillotine of potential lawsuits hanging over our heads?

I think this book should be required reading for the College students. In today "politically correct" culture this one is a breath of fresh air.I would strongly suggest to read his other books like "Death of Common sense"

Howard's previous effort, "Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America," was spot-on. This one, unfortunately, takes the misguided and anti-liberty view that our courts are supposed to make law, rather than decide its legality.Howard correctly excoriates the judicial approach which examines laws in anal-rententive detail, which finds "hidden meaning" where there plainly is none. He correctly prefers the precepts of common law over the intrusive restrictions of legislation. He believes judges should have the power to simply throw out obviously ridiculous cases. Yet, Howard goes too far, and has nothing but praise for the idea that judges should be able to use their "superior abilities" to make life decisions for us poor, simple regular folks.He assumes that judges are the wisest members of society, and loves the idea that they are often appointed for life, which supposedly leaves them free to consider long term views. He wholly embraces the idea that judges should make law for the benefit of society, that they should decide social issues for our own good. (A typical example found in the book is his adulation of the anti-property rights Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, an elitist and moral relativist. In a case Howard highlights, Holmes ruled that a statute which restricted the workday of bakery employees "for their own safety" to ten hours was legal. Fortunately, the rest of the court voted against him, which Howard laments. Of course, there is nothing in the Constitution allowing the government to restrict workers' hours, nothing which allows any government interference in business practices; any attempt to do so is a monstrous "stretching" of the document and an assault on liberty. Yet Holmes is lauded by Howard for his efforts at social intervention.)Essentially, Howard wants judges to run the country, because they are just so darn smart.

These compelling life stories stand up against the best passages of McCain's previous works. Alas, his writing becomes more vague and less interesting when he shifts to a more abstract discussion of the need for courage in the post–September 11 era. In offering anecdotes of individuals whose actions embody the rarity of true courage, his well-drawn examples range from Navajo leaders to Colorado River explorers to Jewish freedom fighter Hannah Seneshand Burmese dissident and Nobel Peace Prize-recipient Aung San Suu Kyi. He reflects on the wellsprings of courage, defining it as conscious self-sacrifice "for the sake of others or to uphold a virtue," encompassing actions that may be spurred by honor, outrage, a sense of duty, one's conscience, or moral obligation. He is self-critical and careful to avoid personal aggrandizement, but coaches readers to believe that one can use "fear [as] the opportunity for courage," and, by tackling modest daily challenges, increase the probability of summoning deeper reserves when needed. The book is not a primer but is, rather, a declaration of why striving for courage is fundamentally important as an attribute of character. Sen McCain clearly makes the case of why we all need to be courageous when the opportunity falls on us. He very well makes the argument that Courage is not an end goal, but rather the result of the way we lead our lives. To be Courageous, we need to morally clear in the daily choices we make that we put us in a position to show courage when the need arises. The book is filled with excellent examples of people who responded to the call to be courageous.

Well-written and provocative...it was a very good read, and I am glad to have the insight into McCain's feelings on this subject (even if I am angry with him these days). It arrived quickly & in brand new condition.

I'm a big fan of Sen. McCain for his courageous service to our country, he doesn't mention his bravery, even down plays it. Discusses others and there virtues and unselfishness to step up for a cause, at the risk of losing there own lives. I related it to 9/11, as did he. Those we wouldn't expect to be hero "material" can bee a surprise to us all. Not always centered around war. Quick read and worth the time.

So well thought out and well written. McCain is, as always, honest and upfront. He is unrelenting in his determination to define courage as something way more than mere endurance in the face of adversity.

John McCain uses the stories of several obviously heroic individuals to analyze courage; what it is and isn’t, why it is important, and why we should strive to have some by overcoming fear in our everyday adventures.

It's written from a true prospective as from one that has been there and has first hand knowledge of the brutal account. We learn from those that have lived through this horrific times. One one that has been there can actually tell the truth.

We no longer teach civics in public high school. We don't study and honor those who possessed great courage. Immigrants prepping for naturalization learn more than the average student. If every public school student were required to read about heroes like John McCain, we would be a stronger nation. Without history and courage, Big Brother can make what we value thought crime.

I will read this book many more times. As are all the books I have read by Senator McCain, this book is very well-written. His definition of courage had me re-examining my thoughts on courage. Senator McCain gets to the very essence of human nature, motivation, selflessness, and the impact of such qualities on human behavior. He paints an amazing picture of what it is to embody courage, even when you may not realize you are courageous. Many times this book brought me to tears, but that is a good thing! As I said, I will read this book many more times.

I loved Noa, Callum, and Judah!The story is narrated by Noa, our heroine, whose family recently suffered the tragic loss of the oldest sister, Isla. While Noa is trying to cope with that loss, she becomes intrigued and drawn to the new transfer student, Callum, who, she learns, also suffered a similarly haunting loss. What I loved about Callum was that you were never sure if you could quite trust him. Was he the hero of the story? Or was he something else? One of my favorites was "Lost Girls".There were so many twists in this book, and things I never saw coming, that it quickly became one of my favorite reads of this year. AND THAT CLIFFHANGER. SO. CRUEL. I need book two RIGHT. NOW.

This book is AMAZING! It's been a while since I've read YA paranormal and Shattered Blue reminded me why I love this genre.Noa's world shattered when her twin sister died. She lives day by day and finds her saving grace in poetry. But then her school gets a new student - Callum and she is mesmerized by him. But she can't get over the feeling that he is somehow different. And she is right. Callum is a Fae. He needs Light to survive, BUT the Light is drawn from humans and whenever the light is drawn also a happiness is drawn from humans. Callum is having difficulties to stay away from Noa, but at the same time he knows if they become too close he can put her in danger. In addition to complicate things, people/enemies from Callum's world are coming up and hunting him.I absolutely loved this book. Ful od suspense, secrets, surprises and I absolutely love Callum.The writing is amazing and the storyline is very unique. Cannot wait for the next book!!!

The idea of this book is absolutely fantastic. I adore the world concept and the existence of Color Fae and Clear Fae and their differences in ability. Noa's family's storyline is endearing and genuine and has so much heart. I really like Callum; then Judah shows up, and I *maybe* like Judah more. Olivia and Miles are excellent friends to Noa, and I'm hoping that they will be clued into everything in the future books because they totally deserve it. There are also some fun twists thrown into the mix of the story that hook the reader into needing the next book for sure.The only real issue I take with Shattered Blue is that the world building (and much of the brothers' story in general) is given solely through dialogue, rather than in any sort of real scenes, which makes me a little sad because I immensely enjoy the background knowledge and I would have liked some flashbacks or bad dreams to *show* me how the story unfolds. Overall, though, Shattered Blue is a lovely read, and I happily await buying the sequel.

Any insatiable reader will recognize a fundamental piece of herself in Noa, our heroine, a brave poet who will discover the beautiful warrior within herself as a universe full of magic unfolds before her eyes. I think that avid readers, readers who fell in love with books at a very young age and who never stopped loving or reading them (so many seem to stop reading), readers who feel more in common with characters than with other people, readers who are often private, reserved (or at least selectively or even secretly reserved), readers trained by hours of sojourning in the minds of others to think deeply and with consequence, cannot help but feel a kinship with other avid readers. I have no doubt that Horowitz is a keen and devoted reader. She writes like (and for) someone who loves to read, with narrative intelligence, clever dialogue, pace, and a great story.Noa is a wonderfully written character, nuanced with flecks of light and dark. Anyone who has a small child to love will delight in reading about her relationship with her younger sister, and what tale of coming into your magical powers is complete without a wrenching love story? She has a solid supporting cast, too, with honorable mention going to her best friend, an incredibly vivid character drawn in (relatively few!) quick, bold strokes. And the boys...the boys are fun.For those YA lovers who crave fresh fantasy, this world is something new. Horowitz has done an excellent job of implying a rich, elaborate new world of fae and light without tiring us with exposition. She prompts us to wonder and wonder, planting mysteries, and one is immediately relieved to know this is just book one of three in the trilogy, and there is much more to come.

The cover instantly drew me in and I've never read anything about Fae so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm glad I went into this blind, it really left me open to any possibility of what may happen. I love books with alternating POV and it ending with Judah's really made it come full circle. I thought I was going to be so invested in Callum and Noa, then the real pieces of Judah started showing and I found myself fighting internally between which brother would be better for her. Sasha was a little mystery from the beginning, she encompassed a young child while also seeming to understand so much more. I will definitely be waiting impatiently for the next installment.
