Ok where to begin.... This to me was not a typical Shape shifter wolf/ love story. I love shape shifter books and I felt torn with this one. All though there are some good points there were to many I just did not care for. The attraction between the 2 main characters was not what most wolf shifters are described to be with one they are interested in. I did not see a protective nature, wanting to keep the female close. There are different breeds of wolves in this story and the noble ones seem to be portrayed as week and scared. I do not want to give away to much of the story so I will end this now and simply say not sure I will continue the series as I was a bit disappointed.

This book was a solid beginning to the series. I enjoyed getting to know Brie and Cayden. I really wasn’t expecting some of the sadder plot twists. By the end, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the wolves. On to book 2. Four glittery stars!

I love teen paranormal books especially when werewolves are involved. But this book was terrible. The plot was nonexistent and confusing, the relationship between the two main characters was weird, and the high school setting was unrealistic. When I bought the book, my expectations were pretty low considering I bought it for 99 cents, but even so, it disappointed me.

I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking foward to book 2 to see were it leads Cayden and Brie. Looking foward to seeing what others secrets may be answeres

Definitely teen based but flows nicely. This is a first book to a series with a good storyline. Twist and turns inevitable.

“If you like ya paranormal romance, girl protagonists, and dark fantasy, you'll love Wolf Bound.”That’s what the publisher’s blurb promised, and wow Holly Hook totally more than delivered on that promise. I’m not going to do a replay of the plot as that blurb gives you all you need to know without spoiling anything. Instead I will simply note that Brianna (Brie) and Cayden’s story in Wolf Bound (The Alpha Legacy Book One) is, well, how about not just totally fun (though it is) but “wonderfully superb”? If you can think of a better superlative add that on too. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

Great start to a new series! Brie is a small town girl who loves theater. She meets a mysterious new guy to town and her life is changed forever. While going through the normal everyday events of school, homework & working at the family grocery store Brie comes to discover a whole new world of which she is part of. Werewolves are real, so are hunters and Brie’s family is far more connected than she was told. Cayden walks into Brie’s life and her world changes forever. Beauty & the Beast is a very fitting play for the school to be performing. This is a fun read. If you liked Twilight you’ll love this book. With all the excitement in book 1 can’t wait to see what book 2 has in store for us!!I received a copy of this book for free from the author. I voluntarily review this book, this is my honest review.

I was given a copy for my honest review. This book is a great opening to a supernatural teen romance series. The plot is very fast moving with seemingly typical high school students and personas. When a new kid arrives, the main character questions who he really is, while helping her only family keep their home, which seems impossible. Soon, secrets unravel while the main character chooses the harder path for love. The main character continues to show her strength throughout the book. The book leaves several ideas floating in the air which will hopefully be covered in the next book. It had an interesting ending. Overall, very well written.

Review

"A deep, intelligent dive into the world of exterior design, one destined to become a reference for generations of landscape architects. Also a fascinating and illuminating read for those with only general knowledge of the subject - who, after looking through it, will no doubt want to learn more." -- 1stdibs"The best of [Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects'] important, thoughtful work. The private gardens are serene and masterly, replete with inspiration for the tiniest plots. But this book is more relevant as a showcase for the firm's work in parks and on farms. The text is smart, opinionated and provocative. Perhaps, given the challenges of climate adaptation and water management we'll all face in the years ahead, the firm's breathtaking project in New Zealand might merit an entire book of its own." -- New York Times Book Review"Nelson Byrd Woltz does more than just make pretty vistas. Its designs have brought back desiccated properties and revived indigenous plant life. Nelson Byrd Woltz: Garden Park Community Farm (Princeton Architectural Press) takes a close look at 12 projects - three in each of the title's categories - from the last decade and a half." --Elle Decor

This is a beautifully crafted book, with very high quality images documenting some of the finest landscape architectural design in recent decades. The talent of the Nelson Byrd Woltz team is reflected through each project, representing properties along a broad continuum. It is a feast for the eyes and an inspiration for those who appreciate thoughtful design with great attention to detail and refinement.

The photography is excellent. The text reveals the narrative power of the work. And the projects are gorgeous and interesting. NBW creates painterly landscapes hospitable to human use. They are "place making" in the sense of referencing historical, natural, and civic precedent in the plans. it's everything you'd hope for in a monograph: good projects well presented.

I would have liked more residential features.the New Zealand property is outstanding Earth sculpting and plant material were very balanced.

This is a beautiful and well written book with great photos. It's probably one of the best gardening books I have ever seen. Very inspiring too.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of August 2017: Maria and Khalil are two biracial twenty-seven-year-olds living together in late 90s Brooklyn. Maria is doing graduate work on the Jonestown cult, and she’s planning their Martha’s Vineyard wedding. Khalil is trying to get his startup off the ground. At Stanford, Maria considered Khalil to be the “miscellaneous” black kid surrounded by white kids. But they wound up a couple, brought together in part by their similarly beige skin color. Now in Brooklyn, they are striking out toward a comfortable existence that would see them married, successful, living in a brownstone, with a kid or two bearing cool urban names. They are even being featured in a documentary called “New People,” about the sons and daughters of interracial unions. But when Maria begins to obsess about a quiet, talented black man, whom she refers to only as “the Poet,” the story really begins to open up. Acute observations on race, status, and the choices we make—as well as some clever set pieces—make this an entertaining, thought-provoking read. While the story follows a relatively simple line, there is a lot going on thematically, and that causes the narrative to judder a time or two; but this is a novel you’ll find yourself pondering the day after you’ve finished, and probably the day after that. --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

Named A 2017 BEST SUMMER READ BYVogue • Elle • Esquire • Harper's Bazaar • Glamour • Buzzfeed • In Style • Men's Journal • Bustle • Ms. Magazine • Pop Sugar • Newsday • The Millions • Time Out • Bitch • CNN's The Lead"[Senna] explore[s] what happens when races and cultures mingle in the home — and under the skin...Her new novel, the sinister and charming New People, riffs on the themes she’s made her own — with a twist. It’s a novel that reads us. It anticipates, and sidesteps, lazy reading and sentimental expectations… The material is hot but the style stays cool… Senna’s aim is precise and devastating…There is no easy consolation in New People. But in its insistence on being read on its own terms, its commitment to complexity, it does something better than describe freedom. It enacts it.” –New York Times"[A] cutting take on race and class…part dark comedy, part surreal morality tale. Disturbing and delicious.” –People“An of-the-moment novel [that] tackles identity and infatuation…slender but powerful, as seductive and urgent as a phone call from an old flame. At first blush, the book seems like a straightforward love story…but it’s more complicated than that… This is not a book about race disguised as a romance, nor is it a love story saddled with a moral. Senna’s achievement is that she interlaces both threads in one ingenious tale.” –O, the Oprah Magazine  "You’ll gulp Senna’s novel in a single sitting—but then mull over it for days.” –Entertainment Weekly“Slick and highly enjoyable…Thrillingly, blackness is not hallowed in Senna’s work, nor is it impervious to pathologies of ego. Senna particularly enjoys lampooning the search for racial authenticity...Identity, far from being a point of solidarity, is a beckoning void, and adroit comedy quickly liquefies into absurd horror.” –New Yorker “Danzy Senna delivers her finest and funniest work yet…[she] writes with a dexterous command of character and language. And she unleashes a razor-sharp sense of humor that take aim at and slices through notions of political correctness, identity politics and hypocrisy…achingly funny...and deeply affecting." –Essence   “A darkly comic novel about race, about false utopias, and about the fine line between seemingly innocuous, everyday groupthink—the kind that’s the price of admission for being part of a marriage, or a band of friends, or a tribe of any sort.... Senna writes beautifully about the complexity of identity, the intersection of racial consciousness, and class awareness, and individual perspective.” –Vogue “Senna’s thriller-like novel is a stirring exploration of race and identity, and, a propulsive look at a fantasy playing out before one’s eyes.” –Esquire“Compulsively readable.” –Buzzfeed Books   “It says a great deal for New People — Danzy Senna’s martini-dry, espresso-dark comedy of contemporary manners — that its compound of caustic observations and shrewd characterizations could only have emerged from a writer as finely tuned to her social milieu as [Jane] Austen was to hers… artfully strewn with excruciating and uproarious misperceptions…[New People] doesn’t pour cold water on one’s expectations for a better, more tolerant world. In fact, it implies that world has, to a great extent, already arrived.” –Newsday “Set in the Rodney King-era ‘90s, New People is as mesmerizingly fast-paced as it is deeply reflective of monumental truths that resonate perhaps even more powerfully two decades in the future.” –Harper’s Bazaar “The thorniness of desire is inextricably intertwined here with the fraught history of race in America, and, as in Senna’s previous work, she aims to satirize characterizations of racial identity at every turn… Maria’s deliberate refusal to embrace a more hopeful future keeps eating away at her, leaving her in a potentially ruinous fix by the end of her unresolved story. And yet that refusal — and this novel — is also an antidote to the attempt to dismiss continuing racial inequalities within a narrative of progress. Yes, right now, it’s knotty, and uncomfortable, and depressing. And we must not look away.” –San Francisco Chronicle“A darkly comic psychological thriller…Senna’s antiheroine is winningly vulnerable... and New People is at its best when it delves into the worlds of Maria’s construction, or reconstruction… [she] wanders the city in a daze, ricocheting from bad decision to bad decision, barely dreaming at all. Her life seems like it will never make room for the answers she seeks, and Senna enjoys every second she takes to make that clear.” –Village Voice “A provocative conversation starter...with bite and brains… invigorating.” –Paste Magazine “Sharp.” –Boston Globe  "The frankness with which New People treats race as a kind of public performance is both uncomfortable and strangely cathartic. ... Provocative." –Wall Street Journal“Agile and ambitious... a wild-hearted romance about secrets and obsessions, a dramedy of manners about educated middle-class blacks – the talented tenth – that is Senna’s authorial home ground.” –Elle “A paean to the psychosocial complexities of being racially mixed…The novel’s ultimate message seems...to be one both true and unsettling, if unsurprising: that color-lines have never left America and likely never will.”  –Los Angeles Review of Books   “Oooooo, this book! Senna has created an engrossing story of race and class in contemporary America…It’s fantastic! You can practically hear it sizzle in your hands.” –BookRiot “A thoughtful, earnest, witty discussion on race.” –Marie Claire “A brilliant, thoughtful treatise on race and identity in the 21st century.” –Pop Sugar“[A] taut novel about a couple grappling with guilt, race, and desire in the late ‘90s.” –Esquire “Compellingly provocative… [Senna] creat[es] a dense psychological portrait of a black woman nearing the close of the 20th century: inquisitive, obsessive, imaginative, alive."  –New Republic“Senna’s meditation on 1996 America and its false sense of progress is an eerie picture of society today, too. With a dark sense of humor, Senna builds her story with a horror-like tension that releases with a tongue-in-cheek sigh. Sure to keep readers riding white-knuckled to the end.” –Booklist “Danzy Senna’s latest stunner of a novel is both political and bingeable, worthy of a one-sitting read”  –Vulture“Provocative…Expertly plotted and full of dark humor, New People is a thoughtful and unforgettable look at race and class at the dawn of the 21st century.” –BookPage “Danzy Senna’s latest novel is the best of her writing. It’s rich, nuanced, and in some respects, scary. The question at its core is: What happens when your perfect life isn’t enough?” –Bitch“A striking, off-kilter exploration of race and class.” –Huffington Post “[New People] will catch readers off guard with its plot twists and almost too-relatable characters. Senna uses light humor to balance disturbing events that present Maria with more than a few reality checks.” –Ms. Magazine“New People will challenge your assumptions about how you define yourself and others.”–HelloGiggles“An achievement in so many ways. It succeeds, to begin with, in capturing the psyche of a woman worn down by expectation. It also convincingly distills the essence of an “intentional community” in bohemian black Brooklyn. And it manages to send up the literary tropes of biracial representation, in particular that of the “tragic mulatto,” a mixed-race person who’s traumatized by their inability to fit neatly into distinct racial categories and their attendant social schema. Senna plugs that legendary trope into the classic humor machine. …With New People, Senna appears to have written the book she was waiting for.” –The Baffler“An absolutely brilliant darkly comic wild ride of a novel—it’s completely fearless and subversive while at the same time incredibly honest and accurate in how it approaches race and class.” --Porochista Khakpour, LitHub“A darkly comic page-turner.” –Los Angeles Daily News“A lively, biting novel about the heavy burdens of racial self-consciousness and the perils of an identity forged by the assumptions of others.” –1843 Magazine"Senna’s latest novel, New People, occupies the uneasy space between horror and humor.” –Vineyard Gazette“One of the very most interesting social writers the 21st century has yet to produce...Senna explodes American conceptions of class and race in ways that will make readers completely uncomfortable.” –Seattle Weekly "A great read, both compelling and thoughtful. The narrative has a page-turning urgency, as Maria tumbles toward a disaster of her own making.”  –Library Journal (starred) “Senna's fearless novel is equal parts beguiling and disturbing… [she] combines the clued-in status details you'd find in a New York magazine article with the narrative invention of big-league fiction…. Every detail and subplot…is resonant. A great book about race and a great book all around.”   –Kirkus Reviews (starred)“Remarkable. New People plays out like Greek tragedy and social comedy all at once, reminding you that the worst kind of hell is always the one we raise.”  –Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings“New People sparkles with precision, and with antic and merciless hilarity. I was seduced into reading it in one sitting, but will be thinking about it for a long time to come. This book—utterly grave, and yet beautifully light-hearted--is a wonder.  –Rachel Kushner, author of The Flame Throwers"I stayed up way later than planned to finish New People, Danzy Senna’s riveting, take-no-prisoners, dystopic dream of a novel. More scorcher than satire, New People loads identity, race, despair, and desire into a blender then hits high. Get ready to stay up late, to be propelled, pricked, and haunted."   –Maggie Nelson, author of The Argonauts "Danzy Senna detonates the bomb between respectability and desire. In hypnotizing prose, New People kicks you in the gut, then sings you a lullaby. Read this and be haunted. Senna is a master." –Mat Johnson, author of Loving Day

I guess my husband and I fit the bill of what Senna refers to as 'New People'. So I was curious to read this, especially since I really enjoyed reading Senna's Caucasia. Her writing has been such a refreshing, relatable take on growing up/coming of age as a mixed person. And while I related to Marie's coming-of-age experiences (hello, fellow Stanford grads), I found her current-day experiences somewhat painful, as I already knew from the description I would. The relationship with the poet was cringe-worthy: and wasn't that Senna's intent for it to be? I was intrigued by Marie's studies on the Jonestown Massacre, and when the book ended I found myself doing my own research on it. Yet the ending to 'New People' felt inconclusive. What happens? Who does she become? The ending has stuck with me, which may mean it was successful in a way. But I'm left wishing the book had been longer ...

Where to start...pointless activity, under and over developed characters, no real intriguing story line, and ridiculous ending. I never quite 'got it'... was Maria mentally ill? I can't imagine she's not with her education, yet insane self involved behavior. Was her fiance' THAT clueless? Couldn't tell if she wanted us to believe her future sister in law was evil, or good. In my opinion this whole story was a mess. Once I begin a book, I finish it... this was painful to complete unfortunately. I love to read so much... I need to read more reviews before purchase.

Started out strong, but veered into nonsense. Maybe a more conclusive ending would have been more interesting - as it is, it reads like the main character's mom's unfinished dissertation.

I did not like the protagonist. I spent the majority of the book waiting for her to do something to make her compelling to me. It never happened. I found the story cringeworthy. I am pretty empathetic so all of Maria’s blunders were painful for me to read. I really liked Caucasia, so I had high hopes for this novel.

I kept reading to understand the point of the story. I never found it. The characters are not developed and the storyline was pointless and scattered.

The novel was well written but half way through I realized I disliked the main character, she was so self-absorbed as was the sister, Lisa. The ending was ridiculous there was no closure at all and I felt like I had wasted my time

Just not me. Parts I was into -- Jonestown, Lisa, Greg/Goya and The Poet. But Maria and Khalil? Not so much. Why'd they have to be so . . . and contrived. My book club made me do it!

Brilliant.

A book meant to teach animal characteristics, time, and manners is a book with good intentions but although I usually like the Eric Carle stuff, this one isn't a book I'd opt for again. Bought this for my daughter as a first birthday present and initially it was too long and wordy for her to keep interested. She's now 2 and actually really likes the book. Here are my thoughts:Likes:1. The book is long but not too long for an older toddler. You can also skip some pages throughout the book to shorten it if needed for a younger child and this does not take away from the story.2. The book has pages that get bigger with each animal the ladybug encounters in his travels. The bigger the pages get, the bigger the animal discussed. My kid seems to like the novelty of the tiny pages and transitioning to much bigger pages.3. The board book quality is nice for little slobbery and not quite gentle hands. This book still looks brand new a year later.4. There are tiny clocks in on the page corners that tie into the timeline in the story so you can discuss time with an older child reading this book.5. Nice variety of animals in the book to discuss with your children. Now the dislikes:1. The moral of the story is that you should be nice and it gets you further in life. This is a pretty difficult concept to claw out of this book based on how the story unfolds and is definitely not something I think my kid takes away from the book at all, although she is quite young so an older child might pick up some of the cues better. (Note this book might be a good conversation starter for parents to discuss kindness and fighting topics with their child so maybe that's an advantage?)2. I really dislike that every page is the ladybug requesting to fight someone. What a negative attitude to fully EMPHASIZE. I mean really, he asks that on EVERY page. I fear that this language becomes normalized repeating it so many times and therefore the morals being taught get lost amongst children.3. Really repetitive writing and gets old reading out loud over and over.4. I'd never give this as a gift for fear of being judged for thinking this book is appropriate.Really I'm not even sure if 3 stars is appropriate or if it's too high. I'm pushing it to give it a moderate rating.

A rude, angry ladybug doesn’t want to share its food. It then asks many other creatures, “Do you want to fight?” for no reason except that the ladybug is grumpy. It eventually becomes polite and willing to share after being smacked hard by a whale. What's the message in this book? It’s okay to fight? You only have to share when forced by someone bigger than you? Eric Carle’s illustrations are amazing as always, but wasted on this story. I’m returning the book.

At first, I wasn't sure about giving this book to my granddaughter, because the Grouchy Ladybug says over and over, "Want to fight." But it is a cute book and my granddaughter ended up loving it! Lately we've been looking for lady bugs in her backyard and for aphids too. Haven't found any aphids yet but did find a lady bug once.

I wouldn't say this book is meant for toddlers. Probably more pre-school age. I expected something more along the sing-song cadence of Brown Bear, but its a longer story that takes more attention than my 2-year old has!

I should have checked this one out at the library first. Bought it for our 2 1/2 yr old grand-twins.. On 16 pages, the grouchy ladybug asks the animals she meets, "Hey you. Want to fight?" I don't care for the repeated refrain. In the end, the grouchy ladybug comes around and shows some "niceness", however, that's on the very last 2 pages, and only with a few words.."Oh Thank you" "You're welcome" The illustrations are wonderful, and the pages are cleverly done..with gradual increase in size, and the whales tale flips back and forth. My only concern was the repetition of the negative words/message. Otherwise it's true Eric Carle creativity.

This is one of the longest Eric Carle's books we have in our collection. It is perhaps more suitable for older children as my one year old daughter does not have the patience to sit through the entire story. That said, I personally enjoy the story as it has quite a few colorful characters. I also like the part where there was a page cut like a whales tail for you to flip and pretend to whip the lady bug across the sea.

Bought for my at the time 2 year old. I would recommend it for a 4 year old when their attention span is a bit longer. Cute book

The book is in a good condition, no cuts or tears, but one of the main reasons I bought this book was too get it for a friend. But she already owns a copy of it, but I wanted her to have this book because I thought it had the 20th anniversary sticker on it. But the item I received did not have the sticker on it. I gave it three stars for the display picture having a sticker, and the delivered product not having it, considering that was one of the main reasons I bought this item.

The Edge of the World: A Visual Adventure to the Most Extraordinary Places on Earth

Review

Here, from the ends of the earth, comes several lifetimes’ worth of astonishing images that confirm how deeply adventure is rooted in our DNA. We humans need to soar through the firmament, to walk on wires across the open spaces. We need to swim with whales, bike with wildebeests, paddle among sharks. In these stunning photographs, our truant species seems full of hubris but also profoundly humble in the immense face of nature—for, as every adventurer knows, nothing makes us feel grander than to feel small. (Hampton Sides, author of" In the Kingdom of Ice")The Edge of the World is a thrill ride of a book, a gorgeous chronicle of wild places and the people who love them. (Susan Casey, New York Times bestselling author of Voices in the Ocean)Adventure photography, in its finest form, takes you to the edge of your seat with a mix of adrenaline and wonder. Images of humans at play in the most improbable of places inspire us to push a little harder. The place in time each image captures is fleeting. Having excellent photographers to bring these moments to life is the essence of Outside. The best of Outside’s images, the ones that scare us, the ones that allow us to reflect on the human-nature interaction, are within these pages. (Conrad Anker, renowned alpinist and author of The Lost Explorer)These images, and the stories behind them, leave you deeply moved—and excited to dream big about your own adventures. (Kit DesLauriers, author of Higher Love and the first person to ski down the Seven Summits)

Beautiful pictures! I was taken back by the pictures and to have the artists own words about how they took the pic and background was awesome!

So many places to amaze us. So little time to see them in a lifetime. These pictures and the write ups will make you want to GO but if you can't GO this is the next best thing.

Gave this book to my son as a gift. Beautiful pictures !! Love it !!

great book

Super cool book!

Lovely book

The photographs will take your breath away! I loved the description of how each one was captured. I am planning on sending these books as gifts to my Ironman training partners. Outstanding!

The Edge of the World, compiled by the editors of Outside Magazine, is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early August.Chaptered by nature's elements, it's a bold, global, adventurous book, but the intro stuck with me, in the sense that they described the photographer as having to go the same height, the same depth, the same drop, or distance as the adventurer, but needing to keep the camera intact and operational.
