This is a strange world. Long ago a wizard tried to create a human with all the virtues and somehow created spirit versions of the virtues. Of course, this tale has one of those virtues deciding to meddle in the life of a bitter sellsword. The meddling is a bit annoying and the villain has more power than perhaps is necessary. But the villain also is a bit more of the boogieman rather than a direct threat to the hero and his companion.I liked the characters, which was the one thing that made this story shine at all. The plot isn't new or different, and as I said, I found the villain to be less than compelling in a way.Still, it was surprisingly engaging and I'd love to see what happens next

While Aaron Envelar is still looking for those who stole his mother's necklace he must also make a living. His latest job is to find and rescue a Prince of the kingdom who has been kidnapped. The person who hires him is a sister of the Prince. When Aaron arrives just in time to watch the Prince die he knows he won't get the original amount of money he was promised but money is money so he goes to the Princess to give her the bad news.Aaron eventually learns that he must now save the Princess and her companion from the brother who is killing all his siblings so he can be sole heir to the throne. As they run from the people out to kill them Aaron learns that he now has a Virtue hiding in his body. She left the body of the dead Prince and entered Aaron without his knowledge and now because of her he feels something he has never felt before, compassion.I thoroughly enjoyed the characters here, including Co, the Virtue that now must help Aaron survive so that she can too.

I enjoyed the story in this novel and look forward to the rest of the series. BUT ...Surely, there is a sixth-grade English teacher in Georgia who would be willing to correct the grammar and spelling in a short work such as this, and to teach the writer about subjunctive mood, the difference between "lay" and "lie," the instances when "who" should be used instead of "that," the significance of spelling "whose" instead of "who's" (and "lands" versus "land's" and "alliances" versus "alliance's"), the unlikelihood of a Claymore (a Scottish two-handed sword) being a term in this imagined world, the difference between a canoe and a rowboat, and the use of "drug" versus "dragged" (and "run" versus "ran" and "cast" versus "casted" and "bare" versus "bear"). I doubt a sixth-grade teacher could provide the copy-editing necessary to tighten the writing, but flabby sentences abound. Now, if errors like these don't bother you as a reader, it's a fine tale.

This was an interesting story, and I liked the characters. This is one of the few books I've read where the "good guy" doesn't have almost everything go his way and he saves the day easily. Aaron gets injured, badly, and it effects his and his group's quest to stop Belgarin from taking over the Northern territory. I liked the surprise at the end, showing that Aaron may have had more help along the way than he thought. The only thing that marred this book was it's editing. I didn't see much in the way of spelling, but the way the speaking parts were done drove me nuts throughout the whole book. Sometimes it was ," she said. Sometimes it was ," She said. At one point it was ,." She said. Please, stick to one way, and do it correctly. More often, the parts of the sentence preceding the speaking should have been ended with a period, not a comma and then what the character says. For example: Balen nodded, "You're right there...." No... the character nodding does nothing to show the person is going to talk, so there should not be a comma, but a period. I know it's a bit nit picky, but it was hard to keep myself from noticing it every time it happened.Well, despite that rant, I will be proceeding with this series. I need to find out if Aaron and the gang defeat Belgarin.

This was on a reading list at my sons school, and I am so glad because he absolutely loved it! Entertaining with a little bit of science fiction and a whole lot of historical baseball history thrown in.We loved it so much we decided to follow it with another in the series, “Shoeless Joe and Me”, and to my surprise it was filled with several highly inappropriate situations! I felt my trust in Gutman as an author for my young son was violated, and will likely avoid reading the rest of the series now. Such a bummer!

Too bad I didn't, because he seems like one heck of a good guy. Generous, talented, respected even by his arch rivals such as Ty Cobb, this guy helped the Pirates win the 1909 World Series in game seven, in Detroit. I found out that I'd been pronouncing his name wrong, because it's short for "Johannes." German, sure, but I still bet you can figure out how to pronounce it. This is the first of the baseball card series, in which our hero can travel through time using baseball cards. Good stuff!

Good read for young readers.

This was a read-aloud for my sons, 8 and 10. I think I enjoyed it as much as they did! Can't wait to read the author's next book in the series.

My 11 year old son loved this book (which is shocking because he hates to read) and asked for others in the series.

Such a wonderful way to introduce my son to the history of baseball. This was a huge hit and he can't wait to read another in the series.

I am not a big sports person, but Honus and Me had me hooked right from the beginning! I love Dan Gutman's My Weird School books! Now I want to read more of his sports books, too! Honus was my first Kindle e-book from Amazon, and it was a great reading experience!!!

A great book (a good series too) with well researched baseball history. My students loved the story. They remained enthralled throughout! I highly recommend!

“Welder’s Handbook” is a good introductory text to basic welding. Yes, it does not have an endless amount of detail on most welding processes. And yes, in order to actually weld, you’ll have to actually weld. But reading this book first, and then getting basic instruction from someone who knows how to perform the type of welding you’re interested in, will get you off the ground very effectively. The author, Richard Finch, who has been welding for decades, arranges the book by all the basic topics. He covers equipment, safety basics and metal basics, along with cleaning and fitting. He discusses oxyacetylene welding (and cutting) in considerable detail, using oxy welding to communicate basics of creating a weld pool, heating metal, and so forth. Later chapters cover arc (“stick”) welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, plasma cutting, and special processes. Within each chapter Finch covers techniques as they apply to the welding of different metals. He then suggests some projects and additional references for further reading. That’s it. Nothing fancy, and not a lot of wasted words.Would I pay $150 for this—the cost for the much more voluminous “Welding Processes And Applications,” frequently used as a textbook? No. But I’d happily pay $10 or $15 for this, and did. And, with some minimal instruction and practice, I can weld—casually, not professionally. If I practiced more, I’d weld better, and this book helped my confidence level in getting started. For the home handyman, that’s usually all one needs.

More of a survey than a professional's shop text. A more descriptive title might be "Metal Fabricator's Handbook".Focus upon race car fabrication: high strength but light duty and light weight structure.Fair survey of the common techniques of manual and production.Definitely add to hobbyist and DIY library.

As a beginner welder, this book was a life saver! I learned so much and the book was hard to put down, from start to finish! I cannot say anything negative on this product! It was an easy read, full of amazing information, and I'm grateful it was recommended to us by our welding instructor.

This is a 2007 update of Finch's 1997 classic by the same name. It is also important to note that this is the 3rd Edition of this book, which says a lot about the "staying power" of information in the book and Mr. Finch's ability to convey the knowledge he has. I have know of Richard Finch, his writings, and works for over 30 years now (more from the experimental aviation movement than anything else) & have found him to be an authority on the topics for which he writes. Not surprising since he is both a trained engineer and certified welder. The book is described as a "guide" & that is the best way to think about it. It is not so much a "how to" text as a text that lets the novice know what is possible now in the world of metal fabrication, and the amateur welder with limited experience (or only knowledge of one method of welding) be able to self-transition into the other methods of welding. There are numerous very clear, crisp and explanatory photos, as well as diagrams & charts with the only drawback being that they are all in B&W. Of additional value, the are frequent photos of completed projects/jobs that are reference in the text - including a SCCA race car Mr. Finch campaigned which had a tube frame that was completely joined only by gas brazing (Page 85). The general thrust of the book is toward automotive applications, but there are also examples from aviation and even marine fabrication. He includes a chapter on various useful smallish projects that can be used to practice one's welding skills. Though this is now a 10 year old edition, it is my understanding that Mr. Finch has passed and as such we can't expect any new edition coming out, though this book was usually updated about every 10 years. While the mention of recent advances in welding will become dated, much of the other information in the book gained by Mr. Finch over the course of his career will become more valuable, such as when to use brazing in auto restoration (especially if you don't have a donor car to cannibalize) - see page 80-81. He also covers several other potentially "lost techniques" such as Oxyhydrogen welding of aluminum, something that may be of interest to some readers who are already proficient with gas & don't want to dish out money for a MIG welder. If you have any interest in welding, buying this book will not be a waste of time or money & it will be a reference you will keep for quite some time in your welding library - I know I have all three editions and intend to keep them all for the rest of my time in welding! RIP Richard Finch.

informative for anyone who is tying to learn about welding especially as related to automotive uses

My husband has taken up welding as a hobby and he read the book cover to cover. He learned new things and like the book as a reference.

This book covers many areas of welding. It covers a lot of associated information as well . Although it is hard to get all the information in one book, this book does a good job covering many details.

Good information but a little too advanced for beginner. I'm sure I can use it later after I've started welding a bit.

Being a person who's not completely an atheist but likes to read quotes about great thinkers, I was really curious about this book. I already had seen the book before but decided to buy the book anyways since its so cheap.Like some other reviewers have said, this book has its pros and cons.First the pros. This book gives you a quick reference to lines that will make you think and may inspire you to formulate your own opinion. The quotes belong from various sources. Now the cons. I gave this book 2 stars because I can see that the author did not put more time and effort into this. Seems that the "book" was conceived of as a way to jump on the hot religion controversy and make some quick cash. And since its a quick read, more people will like to buy it. Why do I think this? Because there are absolutely no references to the sources of these quotes. For all I know, some quotes may be made up. Seriously, it could not have taken much to just mention where these quotes came from. The author went through all this trouble of collecting quotes but didnt stop to think that it's nice to have references. It's not a matter of me believing the quote is actually real or not. It's more about my fascination with these thinkers. I would have loved to know where all the Bertrand Russell quotes came from. It would have been helpful for other readers too to know what books of his to read. The author says that many quotes are from fictional works. Ok, so what? Why even put this here instead of the sources? So I hope this author republishes this volume to make it good. For all I know, this book can me mostly nonsense and made up. How can I know unless I looked up all the quotes myself, in which case I could just publish my own atheist quote book with references. Maybe I'll do that!I don't want to ramble, but I'm disappointed with this book. Religion is so controversial these days and it would be nice to have a book like this, but with references. So dear author, please make a revision, I know you had good intentions.

I read this book as a pdf, then went and bought the book. The book is filled with timely quotations from people who are a lot smarter and braver than I. This is a great book to fall back on when you need something simple, yet intriguing to read. The people quoted come from all venues and time periods. Even Homer Simpson is quoted, as is Helen Keller and Mark Twain. Five stars for this one.

I really enjoyed this book for what it is, a collection of quotes and thoughts from famous atheists and other writers (not all of the quotes reflect the authors true feelings and beliefs as some were taken from works of fiction).I ordered this for my Kindle and read it the first time in only two days. Then I reread it slowly, this time saving the quotes with the Kindle's built in notes feature. I have read many of these quotes before, but I did find at least ten excerpts that I had never heard before and that I will memorize and use them when the time is right.I do wish that this book was a little more academic. There were many times that I was puzzled that the author did not include some important and well known quotes on a particular subject. For instance, Mark Twain was once asked if he was afraid of death. He reportedly answered "I was dead for millions of years before I was born and it never inconvenienced me a bit." I also thought that the structure of the book (the order of the chapters and the names of them) were a little weak. Other than that, I endorse this book and recommend it to others who are looking for this type of reference.

Lovely little book, couldn't put it down until I read every one of the quotes. I'm going to buy several to give as gifts. I've read the reviews that complain that there aren't any citations. They weren't necessary for me. Just the fact that someone was able to put into words what I could not express completely myself was enough, it didn't really matter who they were. If I want to study more about the authors of the quotes I'll look them up myself unless the reviewer who has suggested that there are other more complete reference books would divulge those titles. For someone just learning about atheism I'm sure it would be an excellent stepping stone to other more complete reads.

Being an irreverent person myself I found great delight in the company of so many other free thinkers. Readers might be surprised to find how many of the founding fathers and early American presidents had no religious beliefs. (Can you imagine a president today being so honest?) It won't change anyone's beliefs -- what ever does? But it's fun if you are already a non-believer. It runs from the clearly developed logic of Bertrand Russell to the gentle humor of Mark Twain. But as usual Woody Allen has the last word: "Well I do think there is someone out there who watches over us. Unfortunately it's the government."

A book that carries the title of "The Atheist's Bible" sure sounds interesting. Based on the title alone, one might surmise that it is an epic treatise on atheism. One also might guess it will be something, well, biblical in grandeur. Prepare to be disappointed. Amazon doesn't delve into too much detail describing the book and sadly, I didn't do much research on it before buying it. It is nothing more than quote mining. Literally nothing but quotes, with no commentary on the quotes themselves and no information on the people (or fictional charcters) that uttered or wrote the words. There is no insight into the context of these quotes or the societal conditions of when they materialized. That's too bad because it seems there was a missed oppurtunity here. That being said, the quotes are quite good and entertaining, but as another reviewer suggested, this book is a perfect ultra-light read while sitting upon a porcelain throne.

interesting read. makes you understand why some people don't believe

Weak, prosaic, short. Save your money

From School Library Journal

The creator of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (1939) and The Little House (1942, both Houghton) played many roles during her too-brief life: dancer, artist, exacting designer and teacher, craftswoman, illustrator, shepherdess, wife, mother, and ebullient hostess. This appreciative biography portrays a gifted artist balancing a successful professional career with family responsibilities at a time when most women chose one over the other. Elleman examines Burton's early work and investigates the genesis of each of her seven picture books, from Choo Choo (1937) to the epic, carefully researched Life Story (1962, both Houghton). She shows how Burton's perfectionism shaped her art, which is characterized by organic movement, rooted in the rhythms of nature, and has "survival through change" as its constant theme. A generous selection of family photos and full-color art from Burton's published and unpublished work, laid out in a handsome, open page design, accompanies the text. Research notes, an index, and an extensive bibliography are appended. This welcome tribute to a beloved artist should be a first purchase.Margaret A. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to fans of the books of Virginia Lee Burton. The book is beautiful enough to go on the shelf next to your collection of Burton's books. I knew almost nothing about Virginia Lee Burton herself, but this book gave me what I wanted to know about her life and work. Burton put a lot of design work into her books. The books were created by her, from the endpapers to the way the print appeared on the page. Her design career is also explained. Also, Disney did a film of The Little House that I never knew existed. The author was not happy with the film, but we will always have her wonderful book. I love how the book explains that Burton read her works in progress to her two boys as a way of knowing if the story held a child's attention. If you love Children's Literature, or are thinking about writing for children, this is a wonderful resource.

This book was written by well-known children’s literature expert Barbara Elleman. She introduces the exuberant life, art, and complemented by family photographs, illustrations, and other images of her inspiring work. I love to read it.

This book is one of the most interesting biographies! It bring this wonderful author alive with many anecdotes about the woman who gave us The Little House and Mike Mulligan. She was a complicated person, and Barbara Elleman's writing makes this a page-turner. It's a coffee table book that will be read over and over!

Bought it and resold it very fast !

As an artist working in lino cuts for now, I find this story truly inspiring. Even more so, as a lifelong fan of ALL of Burton's book, it's the story I've always wondered about, the woman who was able to so beautifully visualize the fantastic stories and successfully create gorgeous illustrations that fill the viewer/reader with a sense of wonder. I still love all of her books and it's so much fun to learn about her fascinating life.

I've long been a fan of Virginia Lee Burton. "The Little House" is one of my mother's favorite books of all time, and that love has passed down to me. I've also discovered other books by Burton that I hadn't been aware of while growing up - such as "Life Story" and "Song of Robin Hood."Elleman's book has some wonderfully intimate photographs, selections of prints from the Folly Cover Designers and good readings of Burton's classic picture books, all of which are still in print. The only thing about the book that puzzles me is the lack of context. There are a lot of similarities between Burton's designs and the work being done -somewhat earlier -by British artists such as Eric Gill and Eric Ravilious. Also, there is a noticeable overlap in Burton's work with a lot of contemporary art going on in Britain at the time as well. Was this coincidental? Probably not, and I wish the book had put Burton against the tapestry of these artists as well. I don't think it would have diminished Burton's accomplishments but enhanced them.Still, we are lucky to have this book about Burton because it really is a gem and has a place of honor on my shelf as a tribute to a very talented and beloved artist.

very interesting book!
