The last major guide to the hidden "gem" that is Richmond was published in 1999 (also by Globe Pequot). It was well done, but hopelessly outdated by 2010. Local travel writer Maureen Egan has outdone herself with this new edition which while long (300+ pages) is completely readable, accurate, and packed with great recommendations. The restaurant, relocation, and festival chapters are worth the price of the book by themselves. Some of the details in those chapters prove that Egan has legitimately been to all of the places which she writes about. I also appreciate that the book includes a short but serious chapter on Richmond's history (not always found in travel guides!). All in all this is a great guide that is just as useful for longtime residents as it is for visitors and those relocating. Hats off to Egan for meeting so many diverse needs and bringing attention to a great city which deserves more of it!

Very good and excellent for visitors to the area.

Lots of good information. It would be helpful if the book had some maps.

I bout this along with a Richmond map. It is ok but not my favorite product.

Best book on Richmond. Very informative.

Very complete guide to RIchmond. I was there many years ago but know that things have certainly changed. Lots of information for planning

Very informative and gave me the information I needed to get around and explore Richmond. I would have liked more bar/food info but otherwise it was what I needed. It should be updated soon though. The edition I have is the 2010 one and thats the latest

Told me everything I needed to know. Very good guide book.

The First Thanksgiving: What the Real Story Tells Us About Loving God and Learning from History, by Robert Tracy McKenzie

Review

"McKenzie helpfully calls us away from the use of 'revisionist' as a pejorative for history we do not like. History is not received like Scripture. And the history of Thanksgiving was subject to lots of revision over the years, especially in the middle of the 19th century. The Pilgrim story, McKenzie points out, was not culturally convenient prior to and immediately after the Civil war, with the New England connection to the tradition quite strong, abolitionist governors using their Thanksgiving proclamations to decry slavery, and Native Americans not especially respected. . . . McKenzie argues for an alternative, for the practice of history done Christianly. . . . Combining knowledge with humility should be our goal in the study of the past. Refraining from self-flattering moral judgment, we should pursue history as an opportunity for moral reflection, looking to what figures in the past say about their own time, and for all time." (William Thomas Mari, Books Culture, November 2013)"It is no doubt too hopeful to imagine that The First Thanksgiving will change how large numbers of Americans understand the Pilgrims or look upon Thanksgiving. But one can hope that the book makes its way into the hands of a wide range of audiences including Christian college students and faculty, elementary and secondary education teachers, adult Christian education classes, general Christian readers, and even secular university classes interested in an excellent primer on thinking historically. If it does, there is some chance by the time Americans sit down to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving in 2021, more of us will be better equipped to receive well the gifts that historical study can provide, including the feast that our Pilgrim forefathers and mothers offer." (Richard W. Pointer, Christian Scholar's Review, Summer 2014)"Tracy McKenzie has written two books in one. The first may be read for fun and profit by anyone interested in the 'real story' of Thanksgiving. The second is primarily intended to help American Christians think in a Christian manner about our nation's history. There are a host of books that smugly dissect popular 'myths' or 'lies' about American history. Fortunately, this is not one of them. It is true that McKenzie dispels a number of common beliefs about Thanksgiving, but he does so in a winsome, engaging manner." (Mark David Hall, Anglican and Episcopal History, Vol. 88, No. 4)"The First Thanksgiving emphasizes the Pilgrims' firm commitment to God and highlights beliefs today's Christians might disagree with, such as refusing religious tolerance. Throughout the book, McKenzie uses carefully selected biblical scriptures to assure readers that history has a place in Christianity, but Christians must be careful not to place faith in historical figures or America. Instead, they should follow the Pilgrims' lead and strive to make heaven their home. . . . Christians who embrace the strategies used by historians that McKenzie skillfully teaches, may never view the past the same again." (Kaavonia Hinton, ForeWord Magazine, Fall 2013)"McKenzie shows readers how historians arrive at their necessarily limited understanding of the 'real story': by evaluating and analyzing primary sources, by placing sources in context, and by imaginative reconstruction. . . . McKenzie makes his argument with brevity, clarity, and wit." (David Torbett, Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology 69, no. 4)

Review

"If you want to rediscover the 'first Thanksgiving' and learn what difference studying history makes--well, you couldn't do better than reading this one volume. By looking at the Pilgrims afresh, they come alive to remind us 'how we mean to live and do not yet live.'" (Mark Galli, Christianity Today)"McKenzie's book is both an engaging account of New England's first Thanksgiving and an excellent introduction to how to think both critically and constructively about history." (George Marsden, author of A Short Life of Jonathan Edwards)"What makes The First Thanksgiving such a refreshing read is that McKenzie gives fewer pages to debunking folk tales about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving than he does to inspiring desire for a kind of historical inquiry that enriches human wisdom through moral and spiritual reflection. Warm-hearted, intelligent and wonderfully surprising, this book will be read and appreciated by students and scholars alike, and especially by history lovers interested in what history is and what it is good for." (Lendol Calder, Augustana College)"Tracy McKenzie's clearly written and thoughtfully accessible book should be read with appreciation by a wide audience. It combines solid historical treatment of early American Thanksgivings with a perceptive understanding of historical method in general, and it does so by underscoring the profound Christian stake in history. It is one of those rare books that is perfectly suited for young readers but also of real value to those of us who have been around for a long time." (Mark A. Noll, University of Notre Dame)"As a teacher, I am always on the lookout for brief, well-written models of historical thinking that I can immediately thrust into the hands of undergraduates. I absolutely loved the chapter on why it took Thanksgiving so long to take root. This work models historical thinking with incandescent lucidity." (Sam Wineburg, Stanford University)"Revisionist histories were once the rage, as academics sought recognition by shaking us from deeply and dearly held perceptions of the past with revelations of novel and counter 'facts.' McKenzie works the opposite direction, resurfacing the history we have forgotten regarding one of our most treasured holidays--Thanksgiving--to help reexamine and reinforce our most important convictions regarding faith and culture." (Bryan Chapell, president emeritus, Covenant Seminary)

Robert Tracy McKenzie has not just produced an insightful account of the Pilgrims' feast that challenges our traditions and presuppositions. He's also presenting here a thoughtful philosophy for studying history as a Christian. It was for this philosophy that I read this book. McKenzie outlines the importance a discerning understanding of history has in the lives of everyone within the Body of Christ and then lays out principles and pitfalls one should consider when studying history. History majors should notice some of these principles from scopes and methods of history courses, but McKenzie grounds his approach in Scripture. There is so much that could be quoted from this book, there is so much that needs to be said in our age of sound bites, culture wars, and moral redefinition, when the past is, as McKenzie puts it, ransacked for political ammunition. He argMcues that Christian love extends also to the dead and to use their legacy to our own ends is both unloving and prideful. Instead, he encourages the reader to listen carefully to their voices, keeping in mind the contexts of their own beliefs in their times. There's a lot that can be learned from their experiences, and their differences with our own values challenge us to reflect on why we believe what we believe and even if our modern ideas are even an improvement. This doesn't, of course, mean that the reader is being asked to agree with our ancestors, but to give them a fair hearing and use their story as an opportunity to reflect and to grow.I'm deeply grateful to the author for writing this book and for a lecture he gave on his philosophy of teaching that I found transcribed online. That transcription not only introduced me to the author and led me to find out more about him, but it also moved me to revise my own teaching philosophy as I was applying to teaching positions.

One of the unique aspects about reading about history and the events that shape its narratives is the different perspectives and interpretations that also arise as one looks further to a particular event. Historian Robert Tracy Mckenzie examines the most quintessential holidays celebrated each year for his book The First Thanksgiving: What the Real Story Tells Us About Loving God and Learning From History. Thanksgiving day has been observed as a holiday for over 100 years but does one know exactly the origins and story behind the day? Mckenzie provides great detail in his narrative and sheds light on what became the most romanticized events in history through folklore, art and literature, and historical memory. The legend of Thanksgiving as depicted in early history textbooks dating back as far as the nineteenth century was based on Mayflower Compact and the landing of religious separatists from Leiden, England onto Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts in 1620. However, there has been different perspectives written such as William Bradford’s experiences in 1621 and artist and Bradford’s assistant Edward Winslow’s portrait of the first Thanksgiving that differ from the real-life pilgrims that may not have peacefully sat and gave thanks along side with the Wampanoag Indians. Despite that sentiment McKenzie’s intent of examining this historic day is not to debunk the past but rather to present to readers more insight of how and why the holiday has transcended through time from its early beginnings and has been portrayed in its most identifiable form; as a historian Mckenzie also asserts his Christian faith in the book and uses examples from brief quotes from scriptures from the Bible and parallels it to the past. Mckenzie writes with utmost honesty and with a critical eye of how the past is written and retold through collective memory and subjectivity, and present-day events that have an effect on how history is presented at a particular time and place. Thanksgiving has experienced a transformation from how it was originally portrayed 200 years after 1621, and importantly, stereotyped from the types of foods were actually eaten to the attire that was worn; inaccurately displayed in a Currier and Ives painting in 1876 of pilgrims wearing dark clothing with white collars, silver buckle shoes, and black hat – in actuality they wore bright colors, a red suit and violet cloak. After reading The First Thanksgiving, readers may wonder which story they would prefer the legend that does not appear to be going anytime soon or simply understanding what Mckenzie has presented with much enlightened details. The bottom line, the past is the past, but how one chooses to observe historic holidays such as Thanksgiving – turkey dinner with oysters and scallop shells or a game of football, it is up to the reader.

The First Thanksgiving by McKenzie ostensibly about the Plymouth Colony's 1621 harvest celebration and its effect in creating modern America's annual Thanksgiving celebration, is really three books in one: a examination of what actually happened that led up that harvest celebration, an examination of how it effected what became American life in the centuries that have followed, and showing how real historiography is done, particularly in McKenzie's case, as a Christian who is called to examine the facts, interpret them fairly and perhaps show what they mean for how modern people interact with their own past.It is in this roughly 200 page book's examination of what real historiography really looks like, is where it really shines. If, as some theologians have said, that every person who thinks about God and spiritual things, is a theologian, then McKenzie show how every person who thinks about past events is a historian, and how each person does historiography in understanding and interpreting the past matters greatly. His examination and fair attempt to place these Pilgrims in their context and make them understandable to people today is great because it helps show how foreign they are, and at the same time, makes them accessible. He has done some serious research in work with the original documents and even the later colonial and state Thanksgiving proclamations. By showing how the Pilgrims became a device for later generations to have a historical anchor for an annual reflection for a receding year. For those of us today, he councils and warns against using these events as props, for our own hobby horses, but to treat them fairly, as fallen people struggling to honestly live out a life before their God honestly. This little volume succeeds in doing three things quite well, and interweaving them into a compelling narrative.

I became familiar with Mr. Coates when I read the 'reparations' article in "The Atlantic" while visiting my sister's house. This book is a more comprehensive look at the horror and degradation inflicted by white America on those of African (or native American, or . . . ) descent, ie, anybody else of less than totally white background and appearance. As a 70 year old white guy, I'm amazed and ashamed that this oppression continues almost unabated until this day, without ever having become a thing that our alleged 'better natures' would not have overcome. But no, as you read this indictment of the non-unitedness of the United States, it becomes clear that, from the founding fathers on, we have been a nation of, by, and for white people, without any real regard for the way that people of color (you know, any of those non-white ones) are treated. It's enormously sad and shameful that a nation of such high stated principles would allow itself to become the racist place that is in evidence pretty much everywhere you look. I think that everyone should read this book and keep close in memory the realities that it documents. We REALLY should be doing better for our brother and sister citizens. Truth is though, that we're not, and that's a huge part of what this book is about. It's a staggeringly painful and revealing piece of writing. In some movie, some character asks of some jury "Now, imagine if she was white". You may have seen the movie, and understood the starkness of the contrast between what was being asked and the reality of what was. That's where we are as a nation, and where we all are as citizens. Try to imagine how tolerable those centuries of indignities would be if inflicted on ANY member of your family. If you're white, you really DO have to imagine, if you're not, no imagination is required - it's what you live.I wish Mr. Coates well in continuing to try to educate the population at large, and hope that his message gets absorbed by people who might otherwise not know what has been and still is, going on. It's much too easy to be white and not really know about the depth and duration of this problem; WAY easier than it should be. Think of this book as the textbook for "Black Studies for White Folks" 1A. Spend some time with this book and get yourself up to speed.

This book is truly exceptional in so many ways. It is a dense read, so prepare for that. All of the essays were published in The Atlantic and I had read some of them. What makes this book particularly remarkable besides Coates' exceptional writing, is what I call the pre-chapters to the essays. Here, Coates' shares what he was reading, thinking, working on in terms of his writing, and how he thinks the essay held up over time. These reflections are especially poignant and help the reader get a glimpse into the inner workings of Coates' thinking and piecing it together. The book really comes together in the last 2-3 chapters and is absolutely resplendent. I recommend this book for anyone exploring the current state of affairs in the U.S. regarding race and racism, white supremacy, and all the ways in which these systems suppress people of color in sometimes the most violent of ways. However, I also recommend this book to people trying to figure out how to reflect on their own work because I think these pre-chapters are an excellent example of the deep dive into meta-cognitive processes and recognizes that we are all a work in progress. Happy reading!

"We were eight years in power" is a quote from South Carolina state congressman Thomas Miller, an African-American who was elected at the end of Reconstruction. He was highlighting the achievements made during Reconstruction, arguing against the disenfranchisement of black voters. They had built schools, established charities, educated the deaf and dumb, and built infrastructure. But his very argument was a threat to white supremacy. Coates quotes W.E.B. DuBois in his book: "If there was one thing that South Carolina feared more than bad Negro government, it was good Negro government."This incomplete & halted era of reconstruction is the framework against which Ta-Nehisi Coates sets his book. He pulls eight essays written around the eight years of the Obama presidency, and shows how "the symbolic power of Barack Obama's presidency - that whiteness was no longer strong enough to prevent peons from taking up residence in the castle - assaulted the most deeply rooted notions of white supremacy and instilled fear in its adherents and beneficiaries."The essays chosen for the book tackle a myriad of topics: the erasure of black history, mass incarceration, what it means to be black in the public eye, and, in my opinion the most compelling essay of them all, the case for reparations. Coates provides notes before each essay, explaining the context in which they were written, why they were relevant then, and why they are relevant now. The book shows an evolution, both in Coates' writing and thought, but also in the national conversation surrounding race, swirling towards the final chapter & epilogue, in which Donald Trump, the main force behind birtherism and much of the racist drum-beating, has been elected president. This book is brilliantly written, incisive, and extremely relevant. Read it with your families, use it in your classrooms, and give copies to your friends.

This is a book every white person needs to read. It will hurt. But that is as it should be. We live in an apartheid state. This man can think. And write. His prose is often pleasingly lyrical, even when weighing heavy matters. I find myself wanting to read it aloud. If I were younger, I might say his prose, when it flows, sounds like hip hop, but since I am older than the author, I’d have to say it sounds like jazz to me. Not John Coltrane. More like Miles Davis.

One of the best books I've ever read! Mr. Coates has a rhythmic, poetic way with words that make reading this very harsh information almost pleasurable. This is the kind of book that I will gift to young people that need to know the truth of this country's history...that would be ALL young people!

Review

"Petty and Zanes have decided to tell the unvarnished truth, and the result is not only the definitive account of Petty's life, but one of the best rock biographies in recent memory." ―Rolling Stone“Imagine a long ride on the tour bus with Tom and the Heartbreakers where everyone was feeling loose enough to tell all their stories. What a historic night that would be. This book is that.” ―Eddie Vedder"This fascinating biography of Tom Petty was written by someone who deeply understands the rock n roll life and the creative personalities it takes to create this classic music. I wish Warren Zanes could write a biography about everyone I admire." ―Judd Apatow“Warren Zanes' writing is definitive and thrilling, filled with hidden corners and inspiring truths... as soaring and soulful as the great journey of Petty himself.” ―Cameron Crowe“Tom Petty is a human-sized rock star, an ordinary guy from Florida who quietly amassed an indelible body of work, and created one of rock and roll's greatest and most durable bands along the way . In this deeply engaging and highly readable biography, Warren Zanes not only illuminates the enigmatic man behind the songs, but he captures the human drama of being in a rock band as well as anyone who's ever written on the subject.” ―Tom Perrotta“This amazing book is a Tom Petty biography (and it's great on that account) but it's far more than that. It's an X-ray of the most fragile, most volatile, and most sublime social unit ever invented: the rock-and-roll band. The alliances, the distortions, the deep bruises and the absurd elations that can never be explained to an outsider. Sure, Petty is a book about a rock band but it's really a book about being human - how we meet and collaborate, break up and make up, learn to trust (or not) and, once in a lucky while, sing as loud as we can. It's a masterpiece.” ―Stephen Dubner“Expertly researched and deeply felt, Petty is also the first peer-to-peer biography: the life of one musician through the eyes of a man who has prowled the same stages and chased the same dream. Warren Zanes tells his tale in a voice that is crisp and passionate, sympathetic, unsparing, and shot through with hard experience.” ―Peter Ames Carlin“With insight and rigor, Warren Zanes digs into the brilliance and ambition that have driven Tom Petty's magnificent career. Zanes gets deep inside Petty's life and songs, but perceptively, he pays special attention to the fierce tenacity required to maintain the complex organism known as a rock & roll band.” ―Alan Light, author of The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley and the Unlikely Ascent of "Hallelujah""If you're interested in the structure of a band, in that world, this book is the Citizen Kane of rock and roll." ―Andrew Loog Oldham, manager and producer of The Rolling Stones from 1963-1967"Marvelous, kinetic, funny, and if you’ll pardon me, heartbreaking...Zanes is never less than entertainingly artful and sometimes breathtakingly graceful...The author’s most impressive feat may be the way he assiduously avoids the salaciousness and grime that often accompany these kinds of tales, and the candor he was able to elicit from his subject...Electrifying but never flashy and always in service of the song ― Zanes tells the story with artful brevity and a keen sense of the necessary." ―Boston Globe"A thorough, well-written, and expansive...look at the life and career of one of America’s most enduring and true post-‘60s rock stars. More than any other source, this book digs deep... Petty is likely to stand as the definitive work." –Houston Press“A biography of a reticent musician that will allow even his biggest fans to see him with fresh eyes and hear him with fresh ears.... Zanes brings a depth and empathy to the narrative that never veers toward sensationalism... Though it attests to the artist's singularity, this incisive, illuminating biography also serves as an elegy to one of the golden eras of the classic rock band-of the days when 'a band was everything, a shield and a shelter.'” ―Kirkus (Starred Review)“[A] balanced chronicle of Petty’s career with the detached delivery of a seasoned journalist combined with the intimacy of a friend bold enough to dig deep beneath the surface of his own personal musical hero...required reading for fans. Zanes's working knowledge of band dynamics, in conjunction with his crisp and concise writing, undeniably qualify him to tell this story of one of rock’s most reclusive superstars.” ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"Warren Zanes’ exceptional rock-bio Petty is loaded with compelling characters. Petty is the star of this book, obviously. But the hustlers and disgruntled band members; hometown haters and kinfolk; wives and ex-wives; famous friends and fiercely loyal employees Zanes introduces us to all play a significant role in the story of the man responsible for some of the most enduring music of our time." -Salon“Zanes peels back the cool-guy exterior to become the first person to delve into Petty’s life story, making for a marvelous read…so rich and thorough that it doesn’t leave much room for complaints or nitpicking …It’s a great piece of writing by any measure, but as far as rock bios go, this is tops.” –Consequence of Sound“If you’re into Petty, or the inner workings of the life of any major talent who managed to get to the top and influence the music of a generation, this book needs to be on your winter reading list.” –American Songwriter"For Petty fans who've wondered about the artist behind the music, this book functions like a door being thrown open on the singer's musical and personal lives. Expect eager readers from rock fans." ―Booklist"An intimate and insightful portrait that can come only from a genuine insider." ―Oakland Press"Author Zanes empathetically captures his subject's intertwined resilience and frailty." ―Austin Chronicle"[A] candid, compelling portrait...Zanes crafts a strong, studiously detached narrative...It’s intimate―interviews with Petty as well as friends and family form a huge portion of the book’s substance―but Zanes keeps a careful editorial distance that helps modulate his obvious worship of the man and his music...Beautifully written, full of wisdom and reverence."―A.V. Club"A rollicking, reminiscent ride down memory lane." -Parade"Petty is not an authorized biography, though it is as definitive as you can get." ―Bergen Record“Petty: The Biography reads less like a traditional rock bio and more like a historically researched novel that chips away at brilliant and flawed characters... Good music bios exist, but the concise tone of Zanes' is unique... " -Houston Chronicle"Zanes is a terrific writer and a thorough interviewer, and he manages to walk that fine line between a “warts and all” biography and a compassionate telling of the story of a man who dealt quietly with being in charge while handling a series of personal challenges...An entertaining book about a musician, producer and performer as well as a portrait of the person behind the fame." ―New Hampshire Union-Leader"Zanes elevates [Petty] from the usual rocker biography...A powerful, riveting read, even for casual fans." -Gainesville Sun

I'll risk sounding like a loser and just admit that I wasn't super into Tom Petty before reading this book. Sure, I know (and enjoy) his big hits like anyone else, but not much beyond that. I basically started this book with a clean slate, more curious than anything else, and really just looking to learn.Well, after finishing the biography, I can say with all honesty that I am now a legitimate Tom Petty fan. I have enormous respect for the man. I really had no idea he had been through so much. I never knew his father used to beat the sh*t out of him for years--but then turned around and mooched off of his son's success for the rest of his life. It never registered for me how hard Petty worked to get where he is. Truly, his work ethic is admirable. While it seems that his family life suffered for it, I am still a bit in awe that he has remained so focused and determined to succeed after decades in the business. It's respectable. And yet, despite the fact that he has been so successful, he's also surprisingly humble. He says many times that he was never in it for the money. He always dreamed of living comfortably, sure--paying rent on time, etc., etc.--but he never got sidetracked by a huge payday. His heart was always in the music. That became even more obvious to me when I went back and really listened to his music. While reading the book, I played most of the tracks author Zanes highlighted in the book. And I felt like I heard something new in these songs. I noticed the layers to the lyrics and the creativity in the sounds of American Girl, Listen to Her Heart, Insider, You Don't Know How It Feels, and others. It was just crazy to me how much I got out of these songs after I knew a bit more about the artist. One last thing...I also want to mention how impressed I was by Petty's oldest daughter, Adria. While reading, I could tell that she had experienced a lot of pain, especially after watching her parents divorce and then having to essentially raise her younger sister. But she seemed very strong to me--and surprisingly insightful. I looked forward to hearing her perspective on her dad. She added something special to this story. At any rate, I loved this book. I don't even normally like biographies that much--just because they tend to be so dry, ugh--but Zanes managed to write this one with a lot of heart. I finished it and felt legitimately connected to Petty and his music. It was a wonderful read.

- WOW -....is all I've got to say....my man sure did put on a brave face considering the long life of agony he was suffering - I know many of you may find that hard to believe - but just read this book - and there's a lot of parallels with Tom Petty and every Boba musician I have ever met in the last 50 years...including YOURS TRULY...!!Some of the parts had me baffled and confused thinking I was reading my own biography...!!!!If you are any kind of Tom Petty fan, or American musician, even if yours was a garage band, and you never made it to the top of the mountain like Tom, you've got to read this book!!!...you will laugh and cry all at the same time...and kudos to Warren Zanes (Del Fuegos - BOSTON BABY!!!!) for layin' it all down so well...even that perspective added so much familiarity to this story for me....I grew up cruisin' the same places and listening to the same radio as Warren..After reading this, even though I never met the man, I feel like I lived on the same street as Tom Petty....I guess I did.....Main Street, America....this is as American a story as it gets kids....get you some!

With Tom Petty suddenly passing, I turned to this biography for a sense of closure. As a life long fan , I thought I knew most of his history, but found the depth of knowledge in this biography far beyond what I had read before. It is a very impressive book, and hard to put down.I really feel a deeper understanding of his music after reading this, and would highly recommend this to anybody interested in musical history and Tom Petty in particular.

I've loved Petty's music since the '70's. I've been lucky enough to see him and The Heartbreakers in concert a dozen times. I've always felt that I've known the man through his incredible lyrics but also felt like he was a mystery. Now, through Zanes' incredible biography, I understand that Petty's gift comes from some tough times and his wall is real. I appreciate his drive and determination now almost as much as I appreciate his talent.Zanes is a fan and some might say that makes him more of a cheerleader than a biographer, but he still presented the warts along with the praise. It's an enjoyable read for a Petty fan such as myself or for anyone who loves rock and roll or wants to know more about the process or how to even be a leader. It's not easy.I've always secretly hoped that I would someday run in to Petty and have a great conversation, but now that I know more about the man through this biography, I think I would just smile and wave and let him be...he deserves that much for all the joy his music and concerts have given to me.

PETTY: THE BIOGRAPHY is a superior example of its kind for two big reasons. One, author Warren Zanes had near-complete access to virtually every major player in the Tom Petty story, going back to Petty's childhood. That's rare in rock bios, which tend to be spotty primarily because key players refuse to be interviewed—or are never approached for interviews. (The only omission here: Jane, Petty's first wife.) Two, Zanes — a musician himself, from the late eighties college-rock band Del Fuegos — strikes the right balance between being a Petty fan and being a Petty fanboy. That is to say, his affection and admiration don't get in the way of offering cogent critical analyses of Petty's work relative to Petty's physical and mental state at any given time. Also, the writing is a cut above the usual colorless hack-for-hire fare that marks many rock bios. The takeaway is a sympathetic, empathetic, never blind-eyed portrait of a complicated musical genius with a great many flaws. A thoroughly absorbing, entertaining, easygoing read.

I purchased this book mainly for its sections on fiber glassing and finishing. It was the first time I had ever fiber glassed something, and this book has been an invaluable resource for step by step instructions as well as what tools to purchase. I did however purchase my fiberglass and resin from a different company than recommended in the book, because I was able to find better pricing.

Strip Built Canoe by Randy Folsom is a fantastic book especially if you have never built a cedar strip canoe before. He effectively explains every step of building a canoe and of course, adds his own insight which improves upon conventional construction methods. Above all, one of the best features is the authors website which has a support email address allowing you to ask him questions if you need additional information. There are many books out there on this subject which I have read through but in my opinion this one has helped me out the best.
