I'm the son of a man entering advanced or third-stage Alzheimer's, where our family is feeling forced into considering nursing home placement. I'm an out-also patient psychotherapist currently with two clients who have parents in similar situations, as well as working with a mother grappling with end-of-life issues around her severely handicapped teen son -- a family I've counselled for over a decade. I'm reviewing this book from these close & immediate perspectives & needs. "Hospice Care" is primarily written for those working in long-term nursing homes, and furthermore it's 12 years old. Why did I give it 5 stars?Almost all books about palliative care & hospice talk "in general" about "the elderly", and they miss many important, even vital issues of the increasingly murky & emotion-laden decisions facing families with loved-ones moving deeper into Alzheimer's very dark night. Indeed, some of the lines between living & dying become increasingly blurred. Which of course leaves both much more decision-making on family and often much more uncertainty & emotional burden. This book is about Alzheimer's & associated "progressive dementias". Yes, in each chapter, and in some cases much of the chapter seems focused elsewhere, e.g., nursing home administrators. Yet also in each chapter there are most often large sections, and within the "other sections", paragraphs & phrases here & there that are so very relevant, that speak directly to the practical, must-do ethical FELT-challenges which are, for us, so real.In particular, I found Chapter 7, "Palliative Care for Alzheimer Patients: Implications for Institutions, Caregivers and Families", and Chapter 9, "Advanced Proxy Planning" beautifully presented for me, as family member and as advisor to family members. Palliative care, or care focused not on cure, but on "safety, comfort, quality of life, and [the] patient's dignity" involves, in late-stage Alzheimer's, not only Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) & avoiding aggressive hospital care, but also much more challenging issues around tube-feeding & hydration and antibiotics. Palliative care, however, isn't "non-treatment", "giving up", or simply standing by and passively watching death happen. It addresses the question, "How can we ensure the greatest comfort and dignity for persons facing a progressive and inevitable assault on their selfhood." Palliative care focuses "not only on the patient's medical needs, but also on the person's and the family's psychological, social and spiritual needs." Chapter 7 provides a clear, un-overwhelming discussion of common situations & concerns around Alzheimer's, especially late-stage Alzheimer's, while Chapter 9 provides a model for collaborative decision-making by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals & family. Both give a realistic sense of the process of disease & decision combined with respect for individual circumstances, beliefs & values. Yes, even here there are sections which aren't terribly relevant, and occasional sections where I needed to translate from the perspective of institutional caregivers to that of family. But I found that it helped me to better know that institutional caregiver perspective. This gave me ideas to ask about and a yardstick to measure nursing home programs in general and their professional/family collaborations in particular. Each chapter is written by one or more professionals - some academics, but most always people who are direct caregivers. Therefore, each author contributes from their areas of best expertise. Among the other areas valuable to me were a deeper understanding of Alzheimer's, itself - its more exact progress, issues around eating, infections, behaviors, quality of life. I found a nice understanding of nursing (as well as paraprofessional) care-giving, which is importantly different from that of physicians & technicians - more high touch than high tech, more person-caring than disease-curing. (This, by the way, fit well with my experience during a multi-month hospitalization of my wife for a traumatic brain injury.) The only chapter that disappointed me was Chapter 6, "The Moral Basis of Limiting Treatment: Hospice Care". It seemed not as clearly perceptive of the issues as well as much more exclusively focused on training institutional professionals.Again, I'm sure that all readers coming from my perspective would find large sections of "Hospice Care" not directly relevant to them & their circumstances. But I'm so glad I've read the relevant sections. It's given me a kind of process lifeline, a structure by which my individualities of decision-making, my situation & my clients' situations can be better understood & guided. Not that it makes anything easy. Yet with this lifeline, I found comfort, even relief in facing Alzheimer's harsh realities. I feel less alone & more supported with guidelines as well as more open & able to adjust those guidelines.Did I sense the book outdated? While I'm not up on the current research & practice, still I suspect the way this book may be out-of-date is that, at the time of writing, Hospice was still in the earlier stages of translating its ideas & approaches from the Cancer Model, where the patient remains able to guide much decision-making, into the vastly less clear maelstrom of end-of-life Alzheimer's & surrogate decision-making.If you're facing these problems, and you've found whatever "help books" that are ready-to-hand not meeting your needs, and if you have college-level reading skills, I'd recommend this book. Certainly, for me, the guidance & relief was well worth the money & time to read it.Please note, I first read an article, available for downloading, End-of-life decision making for nursing home residents with dementia: a survey of nursing home social services staff.: An article from: Health and Social Work (See my review.) It's easy to get overwhelmed even reading about this area. I found the first six pages of that article, with its simplicity & clarity, the starting point I was "ready" for. Not too much. And after I read this book, I found another book, Ethical Foundations of Palliative Care for Alzheimer Disease. I have it on order, and I'll try to review it, perhaps revising this review. But in looking at the table of contents, it initially looks more like something to compliment rather than to replace "Hospice Care".

Very good resource. A great deal of information.

Great resource book

This is an excellant resource guide for all individuals involved in long-term care or hospiceI commend the authors for a job well done.

Fernholz does a great job at developing a compelling narrative about the brief history of New Space. While a large extent of the book is centered around the "rocket billionaires", a wider perspective on the context in which commercial space has evolved in recent years is also provided. I especially enjoyed learning about how NASA has changed in response to the pioneerism of Musk and Bezos. The author makes no effort to hide his admiration for SpaceX and Blue Origin, which might be reflected in his depiction of their more established competitors. Biased or not, that does not compromise the quality of a well-researched book mostly based on first-hand interviews. Without any doubt, a mandatory reading for anyone interested in New Space that also happens to be entertaining for a broader audience.

Highly readable account of the current business of space exploration. As a (retired) finance professor, I greatly appreciated the fairly detailed financial analysis. As a physics graduate, I wish there had been more about the physics involved in spacecraft development. Whilst I'm happy to allot 5* to this, I do wonder whether the very favourable light shone on SpaceX, compared with its competitors, is because (a) SpaceX genuinely deserve this, or (b) the much greater flow of information and access from that company has had an effect.

Very interesting read. Written so it is fun to read. Lots of information dished up without getting boring.

Good reading. Private money is what's needed.

My son loved this book

Great overview/summary of the private space industry

I have been slightly aware of these private space companies like SpaceX for some time, and definitely rooting for them in principle. The mostly successful launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket last month sure grabbed my attention... especially the landing of the two booster rockets, which appeared like something out of science fiction and was the most stunning demonstration of technology I have seen in decades. Of course, putting that car into orbit around the sun will forever be a legendary publicity stunt for both SpaceX and Tesla, but it also put an undeniable spotlight on the fact that it was a private company led by one extraordinary man who accomplished this.Well this book does not cover that most recent event, but it does give the reader a great understanding of both Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, plus a lot of historical/political background about NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic. The book is pretty well written and I found it exciting to read. While NASA has done some very good work in space exploration, I feel that ultimately the future lies in the commercialization of space. I am very glad that these companies are finally getting past the seemingly insurmountable hurdles that previously limited space exploration only to governmental efforts. This book documents what I believe to be a pivotal moment in human history.

My husband and I really enjoyed this book. The author, Tim Fernholz, is a reporter, blogger, and editor who mostly covers genres within the realm of politics, government, business, and the people intertwined within... With a wealth of experience as a publications writer, Fernholz writes a lively story of this century's new space race. This appears to be his first book? I was not able to find much information concerning other books he has written if so... Within the pages of Rocket Billionaires, it's clear that these corporate heads are not only egocentric, but they have a serious interest in making money. Rocket Billionaires covers the history of the space industry and its direction. Classified as a "dramatic business narrative," with a focus on Musk and Bezos, this book demonstrates how corporations are attempting to govern how civilization will take their next step in space by either colonizing the moon, sending people into space, or being the first to land on Mars... Overall, this book was written well, intriguing, and an overall fascinating read. We have mixed feelings on how NASA is now corporately sponsored and Space Travel has been brought to you by Amazon and Tesla... mainly because we are children of Reagan's administration where space was everyone's dream and, as typical Gen Xers, have some trust issues with trusting corporations... but that may be just us...

This story is excellent and if you have played The Witcher videogames then you will appreciate it all the more (and vice versa)I'm really just writing this review so people don't fall into the same trap that I did and skip over Swords of Destiny before reading this one. Amazon has this labelled as Book 2 and has Swords of Destiny labelled as Book 4. That is because Swords of Destiny was published later (the English version at least), but in terms of the story this is the order I would recommend reading them in: Last Wish, Swords of Destiny, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Tower of Swallows, and Lady of the Lake (coming out in 2017). The Last Wish and Swords of Destiny are collections of short stories, but the rest all follow a specific story arc so it is really better to at least read the rest in the order that I mentioned. Hope that helps!

4.5/5 starsBoth as a fantasy reader and Witcher fan buy I can safely say this book is amazing.Pros.-Characters are very numerous, yet they are some of the most defined characters I've ever read in a novel.-The world the book is set in is full of wonder and mysteries-The pacing is quick and the Witcher is always on the move.-There is adult content and violence but the author doesn't go out of the way to shove it in your face like other novels I've read.Cons.-The writing style feels a little strange but that's probably because the book has been translated from another language. For people who haven't played the video game and are new to the series this book is a well paced action/adventure/even kind of drama novel that revolves around a wanderer called a Geralt of Rivia. A Witcher, or a professional monster bounty hunter who kills evil monsters(there are good monsters too!) if the price is right. For people who have played the video games, there isn't any overlap story wise(you aren't reading the video game), you will find a great deal of back story and how many of the people you meet playing as Geralt aren't just random characters thrown in by a developer but people who have a long history with the Witcher and have had purpose in Geralt's past.

Well, if you like the Witcher, you have to start somewhere. This book reads like an introduction to the later novels. There are a lot of hard-to-pronounce names dropped in unison during conventions of characters, and it's quite hard to care unless you are already familiar with the politics of the series (which should be difficult for someone actually reading this book first.)Finally, there are cases of some really bad writing style, which I know someone anonymous like myself would've gotten 2 star reviews for - like having pages of pure dialog, without any description of the scenery or actions it apparently takes place in, leaving everything to the imagination, as if we were watching a video that already provides these details for us.Still, seen as part of a whole, and if you're interested in getting acquainted with the Witcher series, you need to read Blood of Elves for the background.

I think I have to preface this review by saying that I love The Witcher games, so I might be a little biased when I say I like the books. Especially since I've already fallen in love with these characters. That being said, I think the developers did a pretty decent job at being loyal to the source material.I'm not 100% sure which order you are supposed to read these books. It's also harder because these books were originally written in Sapkowski's native language of Polish and are translated to English, so sometimes I think it takes a lot longer to be translated. Some Polish speaking fans have even just taken to translating the books themselves! But, I think you are supposed to read the two short story collections The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny before reading this novel. I think it gives you more background before reading this one. What I really like about this novel is that we get to see more of Geralt and Ciri. YAY! I love getting to see this crotchety old man really care for this strange girl that basically gets dropped into his lap. Ciri doesn't have a good relationship with her real parents, but I love the bond that she forms with Geralt. I also love when the Sorceress Triss comes to visit The Witchers at Kaer Morhen she has to explain to them that they have no idea how to raise girls!I like that we get to see Ciri spend a lot time with Yennefer. It gave me more insight in Yenn as a character. In the short story collections she's really cold and unfeeling and she messes with Geralt's feelings a lot. Although, I think she also thinks Geralt has no feelings so she treats him like this as a way to protect herself. When Yenn is teaching Ciri about magic, there's a really strong bond between them. I loved the teasing relationship between them.Although I loved how Sapkowski builds the foundation for this found family, there were a few things about this novel that I just couldn't get into. First of all, I'm not a fan of really long chapters, and this book had very long chapters! Maybe this was just because it's a translation, but I would have liked it to be broken up a little more. Another thing that bothered me was a chapter when all the Kings get together to talk about if Ciri is still alive. Like Geralt, I don't care about politics so I found this chapter SUPER boring!

This book was unexpected. It has all the trappings of high-fantasy - elves, dwarves , dragons, wizards, lost princesses - but it also has depth and intelligence. The characters are surprisingly real, with flaws and hopes that draw the reader in. Sapkowski gives us heroes we can identify with, heroes we want to root for. The villains are fleshed out and believable. The tone is tounge-in-cheek, but direct. I highly recommend Blood of Elves. People who like Michael Swanwick, Andy Remic, and Roger Zelazney will be well satisfied. You should read The Last Wish first, though. The stories in that collection set up this series. Not necessary, but recommended.
