Chapters 1-3 and 7 are great introduction to background classical mechanics and derivation of semiclassical propagator. They are kind of work of art. I doubt that better presentation of this material is possible and strongly recommend for a newcomer to the field to read them.I gave only 4 stars because other chapters unfortunately are not that great. First disappointment for me was section 7.7. Trace formula, which is one of the main results of the whole theory, is written there without derivation, and even without serious discussion. Similar problems are found throughout other places. Chapters usually start with a couple of well written introductory sections with elementary material that can be found in many other textbooks. This material is often not directly related to semiclassical physics. After this, difficult steps are often thrown off and presentation has style of a nicely illustrated review that however does not teach how to do calculations.I conclude that apart from several chapters and sections, this book is not a pedagogical introduction to the methods of semiclassical physics. It is what author wrote: a book that is useful to have. I do not regret buying it. I recommend it but I wish it were more self-sufficient in terms of formulas for nontrivial topics.
Great book on semiclassial dynamics! I bought it immediately after it was published. Enjoying reading it since.
Intuitively written book. Love this book more than the classic text by Maslov and Fedoriuk.
