Mr. McClellan gives us another terrific story and brings back some of the fun characters in is book. Some new characters have been added and they live up to the standards set in the previous series. However, as I read this book there was something nagging at me that wasn't quite right for the world that had been previously set out for us in the Powder Mage series. It didn't take long for me to pinpoint the problems but they kept popping up and disrupting the world I had known and loved. It was a little sad for me as the original series had established a world that I very much enjoyed and it took a goodly percentage of the book to engross me enough in the storyline so that these differences nagged less at me.The first is the swearing. It's Earth-style swearing. One of the fun things in the first series was the invention of a different style of swearing that still got the point across, in much the same way the TV show Firefly invented colloquialisms that fascinated and caused one to pay close attention to the dialog to both figure out what the words were and then what they meant. It was like somebody seriously broke the First Contact rules and added a bunch of new vocabulary to the indiginous species since the last book. The other problem was in a similar vein. That was the repeated use of modern Earth sayings and expressions. I hesitate to call Mr. McClellan lazy in his writing. He did, after all, write the entire first series without overdoing either of these problems. It just made me a little sad in that these detracted from the wonderful universe that had been established for me.So, overall I'd give this book five stars for the story but only two-three stars for the writing. Having the characters speak differently seemed to bleed over into causing the characters to act a little differently and it just changed the feel of the universe for me, and not in a good way. Will I continue to buy the new series? Possibly, but it's not the same. It's like series from the 60s, 70s and 80s scifi where an author would die or opt out and the publisher would bring in someone like Larry Niven to finish up the story arc. That's it: it's more like Mr. McClelland outlined the story and someone else came in to write the book. See the first Mitch Rapp book after Vince Flynn passed away for an example except that, in this case, I can see no reason for a ghost writer to be brought in.

With Sins of Empire, Brian McClellan cements himself as one of the brightest young stars writing fantasy today. The Powder Mage trilogy was no fluke. The magic systems are inventive and cool, the setting refreshing, and McClellan writes big battle scenes better than just about anyone.Sins of Empire is the first book in the Gods of Blood and Powder series, a sequel series to The Powder Mage trilogy. There is really no reason not to start with the Powder Mage trilogy, but Sins of Empire is an easily accessible entre into McClellan’s world. It takes place a continent away and ten years after the events of the Powder Mage trilogy. One of the minor characters from the first series—Vlora—is now a major POV character, and other characters from the first series show up, but you don’t need to know who they are to enjoy the book.I’m going to spend some time talking about the setting. I complained in my review of Promise of Blood that the setting was a little too generic-Europe. A change in venue solves that. The tech is that of the late-1700s/early-1800s. As in our world, it is a time of revolutions. A French Revolution-esque revolution in Adro served as the setting for the first series. Sins of Empire takes place in Fatrasta, another continent and a former colony of Kez (the country serving as an antagonist in the first series), that won its independence roughly ten years ago as well. Landfall is the capital city. Most of the action takes place there. The residents are largely Kressian (i.e., tracing this ancestry back to Kez), but there is a large Palo population. The Palo are distinctly red-headed and freckled and draw heavily from both Native American and Irish history. Fatrasta more generally isn’t easily tied to a real world equivalent, although comparisons to the United States and Singapore seem most natural. There are three major/POV characters. The first is Vlora. As I mentioned, she was a minor character in the Powder Mage trilogy. Since the events of that series, she left the Adran army, taking the cream of the crop to form the Riflejack mercenary company. Notably, this includes Olem, Tamas’ primary aide from the first series. The book opens with the Riflejacks having re-seized a fort on the frontier. Wooden frontier forts aren’t much against canons, but Vlora is disconcerted to find a body garbed in swamp dragon (gator) leathers and bone axes. A body surrounded by dozens of dead from her company. The mystery of the dragonmen will be a key plot point when the Riflejacks head back to Landfall to take a job hunting down a Palo insurgent. Vlora is a powder mage. That is, she has magical abilities tied to gunpowder. Snorting gunpowder gives her super strength, reflexes, senses, etc. She can detonate powder. Or fire an early modern rifle accurately at distances of over a mile. We didn’t get to see much of Vlora in the first series, but I’m glad to see her come into her own here. Vlora is the biggest tie to the old series—she still wears the scars, physical and otherwise, from the revolution. The other two POV characters are new. The first is Ben Styke. Mad Ben Styke, that is, formerly of the Mad Lancers, heroes of the Fatrastan revolution. Currently of a labor camp just outside of Landfall. He’s not the man he used to be. Surviving a firing squad—twice!—will do that to a man. He has a crippled hand and walks with a limp. But he’s still 6-and-a-half feet tall and a killer. He has powerful enemies seeking to ensure he never leaves, but a lawyer named Tampo gets him out and gives him a job.“So,” Styke said. “Who do you want me to kill?”“Have you ever heard of Lady Vlora Flint?” Tampo asked.McClellan was right. Mad Ben Styke is my favorite character. The final POV character, on the other hand, was a disappointment. But then, for a spy like Michel, being forgettable is a feature, not a bug. Michel is a member of the Blackhats, the secret police that help keep the Lady Chancellor in power and the people in Landfall in line. They’re not very good at being secret, what with their distinctive bowlers and all, but whatever. Michel is tasked by Fidelis Jes—the head of the Blackhats and the chief antagonist for the book—with serving as Vlora’s Blackhat liaison and with hunting down the man responsible for using Blackhat badges to print propaganda pamphlets. His investigation quickly leads him to Tampo. That should allow for ample overlap between Michel’s and Vlora’s and Styke’s storylines, but there was less than I would have liked.Things immediately begin to fall apart. Promise of Blood started off with a bang—revolution and mass murder. Sins of Empire starts off on a slow burn. McClellan introduces several mysteries and lets them slowly unfold. This is a writer confident in his storytelling abilities. There will be several twists along the way, along with some action. And, of course, we will see a large scale battle before it is all said and done. One heck of a battle.

It has been some time since I read the original Powder Mage trilogy, but I remember I really liked them and therefore I instantly pre-ordered Sins of Empire as soon as it turned up on Amazon. But somehow I waited until now with reading this, because, you know, there was always something getting ahead it in the list like there was series' to finish and other pre-orders arriving, and such. And now, I'm really glad I waited because I really like how this new trilogy starts, and I love the characters, old and returning and I think it won't be too much of a spoiler, but as the first book in a trilogy, the story ends on quite a cliffhanger. And because I waited I now only have to wait until May for the next book, which is almost bearable. If you liked the original Powder Mage trilogy or at least the universe it's set in, you should definitely read this one as well. I may say that up to this point, this is the best Powder Mage book.Solid 5 stars, no roundups.

Recipe flop! Tried following the macaron recipe to the tee last night (including precise measurements with an accurate kitchen scale) and an abysmal failure! Had read the entire book and followed the author's recommendations aging egg whites, etc/ Batter was way too moist, spread too much on pans, did not dry properly, resulted in no feet/pieds. So upset that I tried despite some other negative reviews in regards to the recipe...for Valentine's Day no less! Techniques and pointers are good. French buttercream recipe was good. However, macaron recipes (why I bought the book) were terrible.I consider myself a pretty good home cook and have made many recipes both cooking AND baking. I make homemade breads, pastas, pizzas, cakes. There is a problem with the recipe, itself.Of note, I own Thomas Keller's "Bouchon" cookbook and the ratios were very different. Have not tried that one yet. I'll be looking elsewhere for my next macaron adventure.

I'd give this a lower rating if I could. I make macarons often and bought this book mainly for suggestions for new flavor shells or filling. Not only did the book duplicate (and provide less suggestions than) other books but it was severely flawed. First, the book has lots of filler--at least 15 pages of "twee" pictures of macarons. Second, as previous reviewers have noted, the recipes contain lots of errors: e.g., the need to get the egg whites to room temperature; the need to measure the egg whites because 3 large eggs will not usually weigh the same as another three large egg whites; the oven temperature, etc.. Third, the suggestions on why something went wrong are seriously incomplete and won't help bakers with many problems they may encounter (e.g., "baseball capping"). Finally while two different shell recipe techniques are provided, and the author explains why to use the Italian meringue version, she never explains why you should make French meringue which is significantly easier to make. If you're really interesting in learning how to make macarons, buy "Les Petits Macarons" by Kathryn Gordon and Anne E. McBride. "I heart macarons" is going directly in the trash.

I got this book from the library over five years ago (don’t worry, I returned that copy a long time ago) but finally bought my own copy! This is the best resource for making the coveted Instagram snack that are macarons.

I absolutely loved this book. Making macarons did not seem so daunting with step by step instructions and pictures. Did my macarons come out perfectly? No. I do think the recipes should be adjusted and there is enough information on many baking blogs to figure out a recipe that works. Despite my not perfect macarons, I still gave this book five stars. I think the hidden gems of this book are the recipes in the back. I made both the ice box cookies and the pudding recipe in the back and both were the best I've ever tasted. Less sweet and cloying than American versions, these had just the right amount of sweetness to bring out all the flavors. Absolutely wonderful.

I recently bought some macarons at a famous, high-end bakery in Yountville, CA, and immediately I wanted to learn how to create these charming little treats. Although I find a lot of my recipes online, I had the gut instinct that macarons needed more instruction, despite their relatively simple outward appearance. And I was right. The techniques in this delightful, thin cookbook require some knowledge and experience, despite the clear instructions. As long as readers understand the vocabulary (mostly explained in the book) and basic French pastry techniques, they will succeed. Others may take more time to learn. These pastries are not for the baker who expects to whip up macarons in the time it takes to bake a batch of brownies.Unless you know what makes the "perfect" macaron and what it takes to get there, you won't understand the excitement of seeing the "pieds," or frilled bases, form on the macarons while they are in the oven. It's not that creating macarons is particularly time-consuming or difficult, only that it takes skill, instinct, and confidence. And once you know what your goal is, you cannot help but feel the triumph of success. I failed only once, on my second attempt, but now that I know the techniques, I'm confident that I won't run into problems in the future unless I'm careless or impatient. Fortunately, author Ogita offers a troubleshooting page to pinpoint where readers might have gone wrong.Instead of supplying individual macaron recipes in different flavors, Ogita goes with a mix-and-match philosophy. You choose one of two macaron recipes -- French or Italian -- and then choose your flavors and colors from color pages, either to add to the almond flour or to the meringue.Although the author offers a recipe for real French buttercream as one of the fillings (this requires cooked sugar syrup, eggs, and butter), you can cut down your kitchen time by making American buttercream (butter and confectioners sugar -- recipe not included) or ganache. Okita supplies recipes for other fillings: chestnut cream, lemon curd, caramel cream. She then provides a wide variety of flavors, as she does with the macarons themselves, to add the one of two buttercream recipes, making the possible variations enormous. If you don't have a high-end grocery store in your area where you can find commercial almond flour, I recommend ordering Bob's Red Mill Almond Meal/Flour at the same time you buy this book. Store the almond flour in the freezer to keep it from going rancid; however, you'll need to bring the flour up to room temperature before you use it. Although you can make your own almond flour in the food processor, it is difficult to get it fine enough or to avoid making it into almond butter. Even if you eventually want to make your own almond flour, I recommend using commercially milled almond flour for your first few times, at least until you're familiar with the techniques and possible pitfalls, since starting with insufficiently fine flour will doom your recipe. This cookbook offers a solid introduction to creating the perfect macaron. Anyone can learn, even beginning bakers; however, the more experience you have, the better your chances of success the first time out. Now that I know the technique, I can make two batches back-to-back without much time or trouble. And I still get excited when I see the pieds.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

Like most reviewers, I found this books recipes to be inaccurate. I bought this when it first was released so I don't know if the right corrections were made in later publications. The temperature is way too high for macarons. If you bake them at 375 for as long as the book says, you will get crispy wafers instead of the soft chewy shells. What I do like about this book is that it goes over the different methods to make macarons, different decorating styles, and what you can do with the egg yolks, because you will have lots of them.

This is a pretty serious book. It's well written and easy enough to read but the author goes into great detail on this subject. Prior to reading this book I never reaized how much there was to know about using histograms to improve your photography..Overall I would say that this is one of the most useful books I've read on any sort of photography technique. I am already looking at two more of his books.

This book explains the finer points of histograms, a tool that most photographers don't ever utilize. Even though it is well written, it will probably take two or three readings for it all to sink in. However, once you learn to use the histogram, your exposures even under the most difficult circumstances will be much more accurate. Anyone with a DSLR camera should learn to use the histogram to improve their photography. As primarily a wildlife and nature photographer, I found this book easy to read and a valuable addition to my photographic arsenal. Lots of examples to analyze. Well done Al.

One of a kind book covering exclusively one only aspect of photography - exposure histograms.Though author features this book as a tool necessary for an experienced film photographers that switched to modern digital photography - this is not the point. The book will be useful for anyone who wants to add such valuable tool as exposure histograms to theirs arsenal. It is difficult to perceive some points of a particular topic but overall it's much better than reading an obvious for experienced photographers things.Overall, book gives perfect understanding for what is histograms in photography, what are they for, their types and how to read and use them.I do not regret spending 4 bucks on this book.

I found this book to be very informative regarding the purpose of the histogram and how I can use it for better pictures . I wish that it was a little more in depth and how to use it backwards and forwards between the LCD screen while on manual mode with my camera. I would like to know if I can adjust the histogram on the LCD screen prior to taking the picture or if there is anything else on my camera dials that I can use to watch the histogram I just for my picture. I would recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how to take good pictures and use the histogram as a guide. I will be going back to this book again for reference when I have questions regarding the histogram .

This book is a good introduction to the use of histograms, it covers the need for using histrograms, how colours are used in digital photography, how to read a histogram, and analyses a few photos, their histograms and why different patterns make good photos. It is easy to understand with few technical terms, all of which are clearly explained at their first use and in the glossary at the end of the book. It uses repetition to make sure that you fully understand the points but the only repetition that is really noticable is the mention that reptition is being used. This book is really aimed at the photographer who isn't familiar with the use of histograms, whether or not you are an experienced film or digital photographer, and is an excellent introduction. It is also useful for those who know a little about histograms but would like to be more confident with them. In either case this book will help you to take better photos, and to process photos better using digital editing software, but if you are experienced and comfortable using histograms you probably won't get much from this book.

This book is definitely worth the reasonable price for which it is being sold. It explains histograms quite well, from both a technical and historical perspective. As Judge explains, this tool that seems unique to digital photography is a natural extension if the zone system out forth by Ansel Adams. He goes on to explain exactly what information is and is not conveyed in a histogram. My one criticism is that he does not explain much about how histograms are modified by common post processing tools. I would have really appreciated a chapter that explained how tools in photoshop or lightroom, such as adjusting contrast, saturation, vibrance, and even exposure impact the histogram.

This is exactly the book I needed to better understand the benefits of consulting photo histograms in their various forms without wading through dense technical information. This author has boiled down the topic and presented it in easy-to-understand language. Most valuable to me was his explanation of the differences between in-camera histograms and histograms used in post-processing. Finally, someone has unlocked for me their tremendous potential value for quickly analyzing and appraising images from capture to display. Thank you, Al Judge!

I recently bought Nikon D750, one of the most advanced Camera that Nikon makes, to advance my photography skills to the next level. I had no clue when I saw a Historgram on the LCD screen what they are, why they are there and what information they provide. That is when I decided to buy this book to educate my self about Historgram. After reading this book, I realized that in modern world of digital photography, it is extremely important to understand histograms and how to properly set your camera using information from a histogram for a better exposure and, in this regard, this book is very helpful. Al Judge has the uncanny ability to explain complex matters in very simple terms. I also like the way he writes a book: "Definitions are identified by font and color...; Significant terms are identified by a bold, italic font". Such a simple approach/idea makes it easy to find information for a specific topic. I was so impressed by Al's writing style, which was easy to comprehend, that I decided to buy his other books on other photography topic . Whether you are a beginner or advanced photographer, and need a crash course in Histograms, this is the book to buy.
