I think that for a lot of us, at least at some point in our lives, faith means dutifully going to Church and mindlessly repeating the same prayers, that is without actually paying attention to what we hear or say. Theological treaties tend to be very intricate and keen on details for lay persons to follow. In between these extremes, there are Father Jim's books on Jesus. Not only that they are very nicely written and always with at least a tiny bit of humour, but they are extremely useful in this one thing: opening our eyes and ears and waking us up from the mindless trance so that we actually think, actively think, about Gospels, about our prayers and ultimately about our faith.

Jesus understands. For me, this is the central message of Fr. James Martin, SJ’s newest book SEVEN LAST WORDS: AN INVITATION TO A DEEPER FRIENDSHIP WITH JESUS. Meditating on and praying about each phrase brings me closer to Jesus, who is already reaching out to all of us in our human condition. This book is a great resource for Lent and to read throughout the year when facing emotional and physical pain.I particularly appreciate Fr. Jim’s historical interpretation and the way he shows us Jesus’ humanity and divinity, including Jesus’ ministry of joy. This well-rounded picture of Jesus makes him more accessible. This book has brought my prayer life to a new level.

I passed this wonderful meditation onto others so that they may enjoy the depth of the spirituality of James Martin, S.J. He brings a depth to these words that gives us an opportunity to delve into the mystery of who Christ is both in his eyes and on our own journey. One of the spiritually brilliant priests in my parish has shared his meditation on Good Friday that kept people in Church praying for another half hour. We are blessed with the guidance of people who have worked hard and enjoyed their relationship with Christ and His people.

The perfect kickoff to my Lenten goal of reading more to further understand Jesus. So glad that God called James Martin to use his exceptional talent and approachable nature to help inspire others. Really great read, made me wish I could have heard these sermons live at St. Patrick's.

Whenever I read one of Father Martin's books, I feel as though we have met for a cup of coffee and are chatting as old friends. Father Martin has a way of making his message personal to the reader and applicable to daily situations. I read Seven Last Words for devotionals during Lent; however, it would be appropriate anytime. Father Martin guides the reader to seek deeper meaning from the few phrases that Jesus spoke while dying on the cross. Not only does Father Martin explore the significance of the words as they relate to Jesus's life and final moments, he uses them to teach us how we can have a closer relationship to Christ. The dual aspect of Christ as Divine as well as a human being is emphasized throughout the book, that Christ understands the challenges and trials that we all face as human beings. The book is not lengthy and accessible for wherever you are in your spiritual journey. The message is both inspiring and comforting. I highly recommend this book.

This is a brilliant, inspiring and grace-filled book by the extraordinary Catholic writer and priest Fr. James Martin. Based on a sermon he gave on Good Friday 2015 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, the book succinctly--but with incredible wisdom and perception--explains each of the seven last words (really sentences) of Christ as he hung on the cross.Christians believe that Christ was fully divine AND full human. This little book goes far in explaining this mystery. Christ's humanity, including the agonizing physical suffering of the Crucifixion, his abiding love for his mother, his feelings of abandonment by God and even his thirst on the cross, link him to us in a basic human way.This would be an excellent book to read on Good Friday and can easily be read in a single day (even by not-so-fast readers).Best of all, Fr. Martin writes for everyone--not just Roman Catholics. This book is such a blessing!

Beautiful meditations, sometimes just plain entertaining. Martin can write, for sure. I listened to the audio book, then played a chapter for my Bible study group and they were so enthusiastic that even after Easter we are reading the rest of it together. It's a particularly short book, which is good for a group reading aloud and commenting every few paragraphs. It's very easy to do a chapter in one session.Martin gives good insights as to the seven last statements as recorded in the Gospels -- for instance, in the chapter on "I thirst," he goes into some detail about how Jesus had a body, just like we do: he got colds and stomach aches, splinters, tired feet, etc. He even threw up! This sounds rather indelicate in a review, but Martin has just the right touch and the right tone. I highly recommend it.

What a great book! I just finished reading it and I will read it again. It is perfect for Lent or any time of year you need inspiration. It is easy reading and lifts you up so that you understand Jesus is just like us and understands us very well. I love this book and highly recommend it.

As other reviews have mentioned, the story in this book is very much condensed. I knew that going in so our expectations were not set high. My 2 year old son loves books and anything I can do to encourage reading is a plus. The character and story recognition appealed to him and he was excited to read this book. It is a part of our nightime routine, we have several books in rotation.

The big collection of Little Golden Books we have in our home based on all of the Disney movies have been so wonderful - with their colorful illustrations and simple words - for our older grandson, who started kindergarten last fall. We included this in a big box of "Planes"-related items as one of his Christmas gifts, and it gives a very condensed version of the movie plot, but hits on the main points in its 24 pages surrounding main character Dusty Crophopper's adventures in the Wings Around the Globe Rally.It mentions several of the main characters other than Dusty: Chug (his best friend), Skipper (his coach), Bulldog (the British Racer), El Chupacabra (Mexican racer), Ripslinger (the antagonist) and Ned & Zed (Ripslinger's thugs), as well as Bravo & Echo (the Navy jets) and the Dwight D. Flysenhower (ship).Our grandson enjoyed reading this aloud to us, and I thought about what a nice children's birthday party gift this would be (Amazon's $3.59 price was under the imprinted $3.99 price on the back cover) if accompanied by one of the diecast figures, which go for around $6 - fun gift for just @ $10 total!

Nice book arrived in record time

Update: My now 2.5 year old dusty fan loves this book. Initially he didn't want to sit through the book, but now he does. It does have some hard words for 2 year old to understand like coach, pit crew, Wings around the globe rally etc, but he doesn't seem to mind that. He likes to identify the characters in the story and has lots of Planes toys now.An average 2 year old finds this book too long to sit through. My son and other kids whom I gifted this to quickly lost interest as we kept reading. He liked shorter lined and books. However he likes long books like "Are u my mother" and "The cat in the hat"..

Great book to bring a movie to bedtime story reading. Illustrations are not the same as the movie or other Planes books, but that doesn't seem to turn off my son who was 4yo when he received it. Any astute child will notice the differences between this story and the Disney film (which scenes were left out), which makes for some good analytical thinking for preschoolers.

I could not find this book anywhere. So I order it online. Not only was the shipping fast but my son adores this book. He is 4 years old and loves every picture in the book. Perfect for bed time stories.

Let me preface this negative review of this book by stating that the Disney Cars/Planes themed TOYS are creative, imaginative and well-made; and the Disney Cars CARTOONS are wonderfully captivating, and my child adores them (especially the cute music.) AND, Little Golden books are some of the most beloved children's books ever created. BUT, with that said, .... something went totally awry with the Disney Cars/Planes Little Golden books: They are TERRIBLE. The plots are convoluted and strange. The Little Golden Books company should re-think this one as these do NOT reflect well on the long-standing and fantastic reputation of the Little Golden books company. Very unfortunate. Would it be so difficult to hire a better writer?

I personally felt that this was one of the most spot on, and incredibly relevant parenting books I have ever read. It addresses head on what we are dealing with and gives a fresh and compassionate perspective on what motivates our son's behavior. Highly, highly recommend.

First of all, I haven't finished this book yet. However, as I was reading the introduction, I got already convinced that this book is going to be a great tool for me. And then as I got more immersed in the author's concise, practical and empathetic writing, I couldn't help but grab my phone and open Amazon's app to provide my very premature but very honest review.I don't have one, but two teenage boys, and they are only one year apart but, I ordered this book with my oldest son in mind.Honestly, I never thought that having the amazing opportunity of witnessing the transition of my son becoming an adult was going to drive me crazy, to make me doubt myself in one year more than I have during my whole life, to make me want to give up, run away and hide for the next 10 years. Because, parenting teenagers, is really challenging and frustrating sometimes :( . And I know everybody can say that but no one will truly realize it until one day their sweet babies are transforming into saucy teenagers!!I have read several books about teenagers and parenting but this book has greatly surprised me so far. It is so simple but oh so real and raw and sincere and compassionate that I already know I will read it more than once. This book is a huge ray of hope for me, there's a saying that goes: "it takes a village to raise a child" but, to raise a teenager it surely takes more than just a village, well, this book for me has become all that. I am not sure how I found it but I am really grateful I decided to buy it when I needed it the most.I wish teachers and counselors would also read it, in fact I think I'll buy some for my sons' teachers 😇

As a parent and college educator, I not only recommend this book for every parent of an adolescent boy (and girls too), but to every middle school and high school teacher. I learned so much and found so much wisdom that will give insight into the behavior of our ambivalent learners, and provide tools for helping them to succeed. I will recommend it not only to my parent and teacher friends, but to my students who will be parents and teachers in the near future.

This is one of the best parenting books I've ever read. It's relatable, easy to read and provides suggestions that are realistic and doable to change the course of parenting a teen or preteen boy who's not into school. It provides insight on the psychology behind both teen and parent behavior, not only related to school, but also the changing dynamics as boys mature. It's exactly what my husband and I needed as our boys enter the teen years. It's almost like the author wrote it specifically for us - his insight to what's going with my son and our parenting on was spot on. I recommend this book both for its insight on lackluster effort at school as well as how to understand a teen boy in general, and what parents need to do.

THIS is the book I'll be recommending to cis people who aren't ready for something as dense as Whipping Girl. It's written on a 101 level without speaking down to the reader. I have mixed feelings about its tragic overtone, but overall I feel it's vital: Too many cis people have a tendency to focus on the advances they've seen and either ignore or just don't get that there continue to be very real, current, everyday struggles that trans and nonbinary people face.Good exploration of critical thinking (they quote Ben Goldacre, so I was thrilled!), checking one's privilege, and listening to and learning from the lived experiences of marginalized people (they refer to and quote Kimberlé Crenshaw, too!)TW for violence against trans people in "Are Trans People Real?" (especially tough reading here).GREAT breakdown of the problems with The Danish Girl in "The Denial of History".Most importantly, this book is #ownvoices!

If you're looking for a scintillating sex-thriller novel, you've come to the wrong place. We still have a long way to go in understanding and accepting all the gradations possible between these two "normal" bookends. I learned so much history and fascinating accounts of what so many pioneers of being "different" went through to try to find their true selves. This should be required reading in all middle schools and above.

This is an astutely observant and smart book, written with a personal warmth and a depth of knowledge that I so far haven`t seen in a book of this kind. Lester`s knowledge of the science and history as well as the currencies of their political activism - the politics and legal peculiarities around trans issues in the UK one would expect from a book like this set it out in terms of an up-to-date resource. It is also imaginitively concieved at several points, their points about proprioception in understanding gender dysphoria were useful as I hope they will be elsewhere. There`s an amusingly furious chapter on The Danish Girl which raises a lot of well honed points about it`s exasparatingly rubbish historical accuracy - the 20s in Berlin being nothing like the trans-dumb hellhole it purports it to be (justifies it as in their projection-prone imaginations, probably). It`s also written with a touching and accessible sense of personal relatability, frequently risking a lot of real openness about their own life and struggles - necessarily to forward arguments about the very directly personally affecting situation that is being trans and the things involved when writing about them, and so this happens without slipping into memoir, bringing a richness to the sharp and original points they make and helping them to absorb.It was also moving, as someone who knows CN and went to their events in London first in about 2012, seeing the work they had struck me with at the time appearing out on bookshelves in widely published form. It is strange, thinking back to then, how much things have changed. Trans things in London mostly felt like a weird, shamefaced shouty cousin of the gay scene, there were hugely attended and seemingly hugely futile anti-cuts marches against Cameron`s austerity programme, Ed Miliband was doing a miserable job against him, the Guardian and the New Statesman would still not be getting it in terms of trans issues for years and Lester and a handful of other writers and semi visible figures in the community were beginning to help a solidarity accross different struggles (disability rights, racism, anti-austerity, sex worker`s rights, feminism, immigrant justice etc) coalesce and get stronger at pretty small events where I at least knew that there were other people like me, and others not as like me who still liked me, because we had, actually, a few things in common. It wasn`t actually very easy to feel legitimate as a trans woman on the left or the right at that time in the UK, and actually I expect it would only have changed so much by now. All the same I can tell that I am at least something more than a hazily referencable smirk factory - and seeing England grow in awareness in this way is undoubtedly a part of Lester`s many tireless efforts. Seeing the resurgence of the left feels tied to this success, in it`s similar proliferation through social media - emphasis on broad solidarity accross movements and it`s rise from the ashes of the gradually obsolescing liberal left complacency in opposition to the governing right. Remembering the wisdom and warm hearted convictions running through all of their work, very much evident now as it was then, it`s beautiful to see their and others`s noble approaches to changing things for some of society`s most misunderstood people come to fruition.

Difficult read but well worth the effort. The author educates the reader regarding the trans world describing the real complexities. The simplicity that was assumed from other readings and media is debunked. Excellent resource for all.

Beautifully written with insight and compassion. An illuminating work that everyone should read.

This book is more academic/philosophical than the other two books about gender nonconformity I've read so far. There are lots of good issues brought up in this book.
