I owned the first edition and have been listening to the CDs and reading the book for many years. In the second edition the author generously added about 1/5 more very helpful audio files to the book. The four CDs are replaced by hundred of MP3 files with sequential label to match the book's text.

I'm an American culture coach and I use this book with my clients. My clients are professionals who know their areas of expertise very well, but know they aren't always understood in the workplace. I like that the book has sections dedicated to specific native speakers of other languages. I also love that it not only covers consonants and vowels, but phrasing and where the stress falls in words and sentences (eg. the difference between "Are you at HOME?" and "Are YOU at home?"). It's a very thorough book, and with the downloadable audio tracks you can even work on your own, without a coach or instructor. Whenever an expat in the U.S. asks me how to reduce their accent, I direct them to this book.

I have to say, Lisa has literally been a miracle in my life. You have no idea how grateful I am for being able to come across her videos on youtube that then motivated me to purchase the whole material along with the book. Trust meeeeeeee There are no other accent reduction courses out there better than this.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a native we don't really pay attention to those details that actually are literally the foundation However she really knowwwwwsss everythinggggggg to make you speak like a native english speaker literally !!! she is my hero, an angel sent from above :)

Very useful book. As a immigrant in Silicon Valley, I always had a hard time making me understand. That is not good if you work in an office as an engineer and you want to work in the future in a big company, so I ended relying in written communication instead. After reading this book three times (yeap, you read well, three times) I improved my pronunciation a lot, and now I pay more attention to how the native speakers talk and relate it to the rules. Sometimes I still speak as Gloria in modern family :p, but people understand me a lot more, and I gained a lot more confidence to speak in public. After 6 months, I am reading it again to refresh the rules. Great book!!!!!

After many decades in America, and speaking English successfully every day, I decided to polish my American accent.Why? Well, so many people keep asking me where I am from that I realize something is not right somewhere.I knew more or less where my weaknesses lie, and that is mainly in the vowels, but through listening to the tapes I also discovered a number of consonants I have been having troubles with. What these audio tapes do is make it clear to you what area of the language you are to concentrate on. And if you are like me, there is probably more than you realized. I go through the tapes as I drive to work every day, and then I make a list of words which are difficult for me. Then I run the list by my American husband, and he helps me to concentrate on the right articulation. He provides the missing ingredient, the visual.I really think that Mastering the American Accent with audio CDs is an excellent way to tackle some of the problems the foreign speakers usually have, but you have to be dilligent listening to those tapes frequently till they become part of the way you speak.

This has all the material I am looking for in teaching students to recognize individual sounds of English and some basics of how sounds connect in sentences and phrases. My complaint is that the last section of the book is a waste--pages of "what problems do speakers of this language have," most of which say, Study the whole book. Also, the writer seems to think that what students need is to *understand* the differences between sounds in their language and English. That may be a starting point, but understanding what is different is not the same as being able to change the way you speak. But the price is great and there's a lot of info here.

Mastering the American Accent is the master key that opens the door to sound like a true American English native speaker. The book teaches the standard American accent as generally spoken by educated native speakers of American English with no or little regional dialect.First of all, the book tells you not to rely on the spelling to make up your own pronunciation rule. Goes and does are not pronounced the same way. The only way to learn to pronounce each word correctly is to hear the words and to produce the exact sounds. The book breaks down spoken American English into 15 vowel sounds. What? Fifteen! But there are only five vowels: a, e, i, o, and u in English. Tuesday in American English is Tooz-day, not T+youz+day in British English. But it's spelled with the u. Hey, I didn't make the rule. Just listen and repeat.Similarly, Americans say I've "bin," not "bean" like in British English. Again, that's how it's spoken in American English. The book has a list of difficult words and makes comparisons of correct and incorrect pronunciations. For example, choir sounds like k+wire, not core; the g is pronounced in strength and length. Hi-jean is hygiene; pro-teen is protein; and peet-sa is pizza. And so on.Author Lisa Mojsin also clues us the non-native speakers of American English in about word stress. "I went to the white house" versus "I went to the White House." She provides rules so learners can correctly state that it's a house that is white, not that famous White House on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C.Certain vowel sounds are highlighted to show that mistakes could be embarrassing. For example, Doug (a male name) versus dog (an animal). Call him Doug, not Dog.Problematic consonants such as r, l, n, and ng are covered in the book, too. My favorite is silent t after n as in innernet (internet) or winner (winter).The last chapter outlines areas that native speakers of certain languages should focus on to improve their pronunciation of American English. Final consonants are listed as one of the major problems that native speakers of languages that do not have consonant clusters must overcome. These non-native speakers must, the book urges, pronounce all consonant sounds, including the s in plural forms and correct sounds in present and past tenses.This book is suitable for adult, non-native speakers who may have left ESL classrooms long time ago or don't have time/cannot afford to go to school. It can be used as a self-study guide. Enlist an educated American friend to help with correct pronunciation.

Kareem's skill as a writer, and hard work to get at the truth of his relationship with Coach Wooden is evident. I first read about Coach Wooden in the 1980s and came to appreciate his work ethic, honesty, and leadership. And I also had a lot of respect for Kareem, first watching him play for the Lakers, and then his later success as a historian and writer. So, I knew the book would be worthwhile, but it went beyond those expectations: two people from different races, different religions, and different parts of the country, several decades in age difference, and they come together with mutual respect for each other, a teacher and his student, and both learn from each other for a lifetime. I definitely feel inspired and enriched after reading this book.

Books about John Wooden should be required reading. You always come away learning something. What I enjoyed most about this one is how Kareem demonstrates how 2 thoughful, well intentioned people can have different views based on their life individual experiences, and be able to learn from each other's perspectives.

I've followed Kareem since he was Lew Alcindor in college. While one of my all time favorite athletes I'd always perceived a type of radical-ness that acted as a bolder, disrupting water in my river of perception. This book pulverizes that bolder. I believe it was misinterpretation on my part.I've read nearly all of the books written on Coach. Kareem tells stories I've never heard before. This is a special tale about two people's lives that intersected for decades, each having a profound effect on the other.

I just finished reading the E-book version. I couldn't stop reading it. OUTSTANDING. Thank you Kareem so much for sharing your times about a wonderful man to us.

Kareem Abdul-Jabber is an amazing writer. His respect and love for Coach Wooden is movingly communicated in this awesome book. Coach Wooden is shown to be a man who had flaws but never stopped trying to be a better person and trying to instill strong principles and values to others during his amazing life! Mr Abdul-Jabber tracks the growth of his personal experience with Coach Wooden from his being coach to his enduring life long friendship!!! Great insight from one of the greatest players of all time who is now one of the most thoughtful writers we have today!!!!

My eyes filled with tears at the end of this book. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did such a fine job of capturing the profound importance of his relationship with John Wooden that I shared his grief when Coach dies in the final pages. Abdul-Jabbar always struck me as a fiercely intelligent, complex and thoughtful guy. But his often stoic public demeanor prevented me from realizing how deeply sensitive, introspective and warm he is as well. This wonderful book put an end to that. It is brimful with emotion, often self-effacing but always remarkably candid and open. Both of these remarkable men factored heavily in my basketball fandom. That the most important dimensions of each of them are not actually directly related to their prodigious accomplishments on the court is remarkable. That the unique and life-long friendship they forged transcends all of it is, too.

Like many sports fans, I admired the long, successful careers of John Wooden and Kareem Abdul Jabber. What I didn't know is what is revealed in this book: the nature of their friendship, a friendship that can be a model for all of us to strive for.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar is one of our most intelligent athletes ever and has always followed a different drummer. Now a committed author with books and opinion pieces in papers like The NY Times. As a fan of John Wooden I had to read this book with low expectations. They were FAR exceeded.Jabbar is a very good writer and has quite a story to tell. Abdul-Jabbar was a GREAT basketball player, clearly intelligent. Most don't get a great chance at a second career. But Jabbar is a great writer/activist that deserves our attention. He's led an interesting, reflective life.Truly a special book that I could not recommend higher.

As someone who loves a good can’t-stop-reading thriller, this was a delight. Reading the other reviews, I actually found none of it to be slow. I was pretty hooked from page 1.Also, with respect to the time in which it’s set (2009), I haven’t read any modern fiction looking back at hipster brooklyn in the aughts, which is a rather specific subculture and time period (during the thick of the recession). It feels like just enough time has passed, and there’s been just enough change with technology and politics, that the flashbacks feel almost like a period piece. Smartphones did not yet control life. And starting to reflect on the 2000s feels suddenly fresh.

The Lost Night is a beautifully written, page turning psychological thriller with dark imagery scattered throughout the book which was both haunting and compelling. Bartz's descriptive writing makes you feel like you are there with the main character, Lindsay as she tries to piece together memories from a drunken night 10 years ago. She really captures the feeling of being young, energetic and searching for fun non-stop fun with darkness just lurking behind. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of murder mysteries and studies of our own psyche.

Lindsey becomes obsessed with finding an answer. Was it a suicide or something more sinister, she wonders, as she tracks down everyone who knew Edie immediately before her death.What begins as a promising story quickly devolves into an overly complicated and long winded mystery. Chapters of who-shot-John are narrated by Lindsey and Edie’s roommates at Calhoun Towers, which sounds like a new college graduate’s Animal House. As an aside, I was curious about these dorm-cum-apartment buildings. A Google search turned up a two-building complex in Bushwick, where Edie’s death occurred in the book. Relatively low rent must compensate for graffiti-filled cement walls, dank staircases and tiny rooms. Is it any wonder that Edie might have been depressed?I found little to like about THE LOST NIGHT. The characters are flat and annoying, and the ending is predictable. I wonder where the editor was. Almost immediately, I noted the overuse of the colon to separate sentences. The writing quickly becomes choppy. The book is far too long, and the story is burdened by unnecessary complexity. Ancillary characters, who have little relevance, are introduced. The story is stale and reminiscent of many bad Lifetime movies. In defense of Lifetime movies, however, they end in two hours. This is a writer who needs a new editor.

If Girl on the Train was set in Brooklyn in the late aughts, with somehow even more twists and turns. Couldn’t put this one down!

This is a nice albeit slow burning mystery about a group of college friends in NY and night that changed the main character's life forever.The main character struggles with her memories about the night her friend died, thus starting a chain of events where she questions her own memories and whether or not you truly know those closest to you.The plot is intriguing with interesting characters, but the middle of the novel became burdened with too much descriptions which affected the flow of the pace. However, towards the end the pace picks up with several twists leading to a surprising end which I never saw coming.Thanks Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for an ARC, I voluntarily reviewed this title.

I tried my best to like this book but I just couldn't get into it. I gave up about half-way through and read the last three chapters. Really no surprises. I kept getting the characters all mixed up and each time I picked up the book after taking a break I had to skim the last few pages I had read to remember what was happening.

I read THE LOST NIGHT over several too-late nights; I hated to put it down. The central mystery--whether Lindsay's friend Edie really killed herself--was riveting on its own, but I was most compelled by Lindsay herself. A thirty-three-year-old magazine fact checker with gaping holes in her memory--not just from the night Edie died but others as well--Lindsay is flawed and frustrating and tragic and deeply real. She is painted in careful brushstrokes, her character becoming more richly illuminated over the course of the novel, directly informing her obsessions, her regrets, and her decisions. Oh--and the nostalgia. Andrea Bartz has captured that singular era in a person's life, those invincible early twenties, pinned down to a time and place sparkling with specificity. And throughout, the novel maintains the pace of a thriller, constantly moving forward toward its satisfying conclusion. Come for the mystery. Stay for the exploration into who we are, when we can no longer remember.

This was my third time I read this book. I was amazed at the depth of this book. The first time, it was a faith-filled page turner that could be read again, because it was written on more than one level. The second time, I could see the depth, but I was reading it with my husband, so I was interested in what he thought of it. This time, I decided to reread it before reading Elijah in Jerusalem. I can't believe all that I missed. The plot is excellent, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. On the surface, it would seem that the subject matter is dated. The book was written twenty years ago when people were speculating on what would happen at the turn of the millennium. However, Michael D. O'Brien has written a timeless story where the characters struggle with faith in the real world. Father Elijah has suffered the loss of his family in childhood and lost faith. He has experienced conversion yet he still struggles with keeping the Faith when confronted with evil. His friend, Anna has lost the Faith, because it seems incompatible with the modern world. Other characters within the Church struggle with good and evil. Ultimately, what amazed me the most was the recurring themes of free will, salvation, and trust in God rather than our own strength, especially in the face of evil. Seemingly minor characters, such as the Holy Father, Father Prior, and Don Matteo, are a great source of wisdom for Father Elijah, because they remind him that everyone, even the President of the EuroParliament, is a child of God, who was free will to love and follow God or to reject Him. We must also remember this when dealing with souls who choose evil over good causing others pain and loss. We must forgive. That is a big challenge. Realizing that we are not expected to do this without God is therapeutic. The book is so well researched and well written that I can only scratch the surface in this review. That's what is so amazing. Read the book. Read it!

This is probably one of the best works of christian (Catholic or otherwise) fiction I have read. O'Brien's knowledge of Catholicism is impressive, especially considering he has no theological background. He manages to blend history, theology, and well-written characters into a brilliant narrative that is both entertaining and fulfilling. As a hopeful author myself, I gained a great deal of insight in how to incorporate religious elements into fiction without coming off as "preachy", specifically by using real human stories to convey truth.I especially want to praise a conversion scene that takes place towards the middle of the book. I won't go into great detail since I think it should be experienced unspoiled, but this scene served to blend personal circumstance, skepticism, and mercy into a beautiful story about redemption. I had to read the scene several times to fully process it.O'Brien's works truly stand out when it comes to characters. It's difficult to describe, but he manages to blend both symbolism and realism into his characters, which is where I think several christian authors take a misstep. The priests in his work (throughout the series) are particularly well-crafted, likable, and believable. Father Elijah is a wonderful example, especially as a bridge between two different faiths (Judaism and Catholicism) in the trying times to come.Overall, this was a wonderful book that conveys truth through an entertaining, spiritually fulfilling, and believable story. O'Brien's achievements cannot be understated, and his commitment to a cause is admirable.

This is my first O'Brien, and there will be many more.While I suppose the heavy Catholic /Christian themes may put some off reading this, it serves up rich rewards to those who stay the course. The character development is dense and structured, the plot lines carry enough surprise to make for an interesting story, and the prose itself is beautiful and a joy to read.For the Christian there are the added experiences of a well-known story arch being mirrored in the novel, with an epic struggle between Good and Evil, with a charismatic but very human priest as protagonist, and generally some lovely scenes in Rome and Italy.If the Catholic setting does not disqualify you, this is a rare and powerful treat.

This was my first Michael O’Brien book, and there are things I don’t like. His conversations feel wooden, his heroes all seem to be priests (who are in short supply in Churches. That’s where they’re needed), and everything is presented from a perspective that is more than Catholic. It would have to be called Clericalist. His presentation of Vatican intrigues is, well, intriguing, though not nearly at the level of someone like Malachi Martin, who sets the standard for that stuff.With that out of the way, there are things I do like. The faith struggles that the characters have are presented in a believable way. More than that. It comes across as tender, and moving. And I was truly moved by the sequence where they find Mary’s tomb. I’d have to rate O’Brien’s strength principally in how he deals with faith on a personal level. And that alone makes it worth the read.

From its Table of Contents, “Radical Markets” might seem to be a meandering hodgepodge of thought experiments. Each chapter elaborates on specific and unexpected areas where “radical markets” might be introduced in their current absence, but the interrelation of these case studies and policy proposals can appear tenuous. Book projects in the social sciences are typically deep elaborations on a tight substantive areas. However, the contrasting breadth of “Radical Markets” isn’t an overreach beyond appropriate area-expertise. Rather, each topic and chapter maps to ongoing published papers and academic projects, reflecting the span of the authors’ recent research careers.Modern economics increasingly occupies itself with tight empirical identification and meticulous mathematical models. Meanwhile, Posner and Weyl audaciously use “Radical Markets” to expound on topics like the inherent justifiability of private property or equal-vote democracy. The key to understanding this approach — and the authors’ research agendas generally — lies in the book’s introduction and conclusion. There, Posner and Weyl harken back to a cast of figures that they dub the “Philosophical Radicals”, including post-enlightenment Political Economists like Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Stuart Mill, and Henry George, as well as more controversial thinkers like Karl Marx (*collective gasp*) and Ludwig von Mises (*aghast gasp*). In orthodox economics, these figures are treated like Pre-Newtonian physicists or medieval scholastics. In heterodox circles, they serve as rallying points for hopelessly opposed camps of partisans. Even though the modern liberal democratic order is a product of these thinkers’ astounding success, the authors suggest that our present day calls for its own cadre of questioning “Radical Philosophers” with unexpected disruptive ideas.Among those the authors dub the “technocratic middle”, this exercise might seem unnecessary. Modern “neoliberal” types seem to take Fukuyama’s “end of history” seriously in its broad strokes. When I glossed the premise of “Radical Markets” to one such friend (pursuing an economics PhD), he suggested that we’re in an era of diminishing marginal returns for new ideas — better to carefully tinker and keep the machine of modernity humming along. Posner and Weyl destabilize this intellectual complacency in “Radical Markets”. First, they use their introduction to synthesize a wealth of contemporary research suggesting that the liberal order is threatened by rising inequality, stagnation, polarization, nativism, and coercive market power. In the “meat” of the work that follows, the authors convincingly argue that institutions we take for granted are both hopelessly inefficient/inequitable and theoretically substitutable. The authors argue that these alternative — including continuous auctions for property and an alternative voting scheme based on the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism — could both help address present social ills and build towards a brighter future that’s inconceivable in the same way today’s world would have seemed far-fetched in the 18th century.“Radical Markets” doesn’t provide a flawless utopian vision for tomorrow’s brave new world. The authors openly demur on the merit of their proposals, suggesting a gradual and iterative path for implementation to help forestall the disasters that occur when humans act unexpectedly in new institutional settings. This seems advisable. The concerns of critics on both ethical and practical grounds are worth listening to. Care should be taken in pursuing alternatives to systems that presently provide a basic bulwark against inefficiency or violations of human rights. Posner and Weyl, however, are right to point out the status quo is already a moral disaster on many dimensions, inattentive as it is to unjustly appropriated wealth, violations of meaningful minority rights, and abhorrent intra- and international income inequality. The authors are shouting from their platform that the Emperor has no clothes, and suggesting he put on a coat. Critics may argue vehemently for pants instead, but have basically ceded to the authors’ premise that present public institutions are unjustifiable and ought to be uprooted for a more just society.I’ve been exposed to most of the ideas covered in “Radical Markets” ahead of time through lectures, working papers, op-eds, and casual conversations. My first reaction is usually dismissive, given how decently capitalism and democracy seem to be doing in their broad strokes. In the months and years that followed these encounters, Posner and Weyl’s ideas have come to roost and relentlessly gnaw at this initial skepticism, especially when I’m forced to reckon with the many failings of the present liberal order. I’d encourage other doubtful readers to let the ideas presented here stew in a similar fashion before jumping to conclusions. The parallel to Socrates introduced earlier fits in the following sense: some of Posner and Weyl’s proposals may smack of dystopia in the same way his ideal “Republic” does, and perhaps justifiably so in cases. However, taking the time to engage seriously with the authors’ ideas can leave anyone feeling a little bit like Socrates’ unfortunate interlocutors, and they will be made better thinkers for it. In a world where little matters like ideas do, “Radical Markets” provides the most articulate and accessible package of the authors’ radical ideas to date. Therefore, I enthusiastically recommend picking up a copy, and hope you find the journey as thought-provoking as I have.

This is one of the most thought provoking economics book I have read in the past several years. The authors offer some truly radical solutions to several major problems plaguing our current society. Although I personally do not think that most of their solutions are practical, this book made me think out of the box and outside the normal paradigm and I came away with several new thoughts and ideas that I am looking forward to explore more in the future.I highly recommend all economists and anyone interested in finding economic solutions to read this book. Although the writing is clear and concise, I must warn you though that this is not an easy bed time or vacation read since every chapter makes you think a lot and you might spend several hours dwelling on the solutions made in the book.

I did read it and found it unrealistic, naive, and impractical. There are several normative assumptions underlying many of the assertions and premises behind each proposal that are simply hand waved as being accurate or true when, in fact, they are highly debatable. For example, in the chapter on COST the authors continually refer to "most productive use" but their determination is quite obviously a narrow economic one that treats people as mere economic actors.It's worth reading if for no other reason than to see how to ostensibly very smart people can be so out of touch with basic human qualities.As an antidote I would recommend some of Michael Sandel's work on the problems of treating everything as a market. Or perhaps Kant and understanding the categorical imperative.

If you like economic policy, this is a fun read that challenges a lot of your preconceptions. The authors prescribe 5 big ideas for transforming the economy: 1) Property taxes set by owners with the option of others to buy your assets at your assessed value 2) The ability to weight or buy votes in a democracy 3) Immigrant sponsorship 4) Diversifying the owners of stocks 5) Consumer data ownership.While the likelihood of any of these ever happening is small, it is wondrous to think of the possibilities. Just imagine detaching peoples' sense of ownership to their land, ending distorting income and sales taxes and encouraging the efficient use of all land? Pretty impressive. Their updating of Henry George's views are much appreciated. I also love the immigration sponsorship idea. This would allow those most vulnerable to immigration to gain profoundly by having more of it. Too often its only the elites who benefit while native, low-skilled laborers face higher competition and stagnant pay. This would redress this disparity.The rest is a mixed bag. I think I like their ideas for democracy but the process for "Quadratic Voting" sounded confusing and it was tough to follow the finer details. The recent concern of index investing being a quasi-communist pursuit missed the point that increased intra-industry ownership concentration must face off against inter-industry ownership (Vangaurd also owns stakes in suppliers and clients of customers they own and therefore want high competition). The book also did little to persuade me that data usage by FANG needs a) be more regulated b) should pay customers who already have a huge benefit of enjoying platforms for free. The platform itself creates the content and I am glad I can keep in touch with a lot of different people without doing anything.
