This is the most important book I have read in a decade with respect to the environmental problems we face. Brand has impeccable credentials as an environmentalist and he has done a 180 degree turn and now advocates nuclear energy as fast as possible to avoid the worst of the train wreck climate change coming fast on us. He compelling shows how solar and wind cannot do the job fast enough, if ever, because we'd need literally a continent-sized area covered with solar and wind to power the great cities of the world. Renewable works for small towns and individuals but not cities of 10 million people crammed together. Finally, and here is the kicker. Even with going nuclear and renewable fast, we STILL probably will need to Geo-engineer the atmosphere with aerosols to reflect sunlight and prevent the tropics and some of the mid-latitudes from becoming so hot that humans literally cannot live there. I heard today on the radio that these temperatures already have hit India and other tropical countries-- days over 110 degrees F at 80% humidity--and the numbers of days like this are increasing. In the American west, temperatures today reached all time record highs well above 100 degrees (but dry). Hence the fires. And in the Arctic today, temperatures were in the 90's meaning if this continues in the future, the methane there buried in the permafrost will burp out to drive the warming spectacularly faster than even now. Forget methane leaking from fracking folks, this methane emission will be hundreds of times greater. It's well worth reading this book to see if you have the emotional fortitude to reset your environmental thinking from the past to the future and help decide what to do when the going gets really tough, which most climatologists I know think will be in the next ten years, if not sooner. Basically, the runaway climate horse is out of the barn now and there is no way to really bring it back in the short term--which is what we have to think in terms of, not Paris Climate or other half-assed accords that reduce the problem so slightly to be inconsequential. I found this book to be so important I'm preparing a lecture based, in part on it, as an address to a large earth science society that I will be president of in 2020.

A Readers Digest - condensed edition - on the topic of sustainability, not a coherent depiction, this book represents collected knowledge of the authors's "long now foundation" in 2008.Very mind altering and helpful, a real update to what I meant to know before I read this book. Although I am not of his opinion in some respects, I am 100% congruent with his perspective which was my own long before I found the "long now foundation":Sustainability means to alter one's behavior to sustain human life on this planet for - say - another 10.000 years.Example: If you want electric power for everyone there seems to be no way but to replace coal fired plants by Thorium fired plants. Why? In 200 years all fossile energy sources including Uranium will be depleted and we will very possible see a catastrophic climate change induced by human activity long before that date if we really burn all of these. Renewables are very fine and we should use the maximum amount of these. But:1) wind and solar are and will be much more expensive than coal and not everyone will be able to afford these2) wind and solar need a lot of space such that they cannot be applied to every usage scenario3) even if we start investing into wind and solar we will never cover all energy needs of 9 Billion people in 20504) wind energy depends on wind blowing, solar depends on sun shining. That is why they need complimentary power which can not be fossile in the long run. As water power or biogas is not available in most places and not in the necessary amount, there will never be enough complimentary. Alternative will be Electricity storage which is roughly 20 Cent per Kilowatt hour at its cheapest, adding again to the cost5) Complete failure of Germany to pull that thing off is proof enough for the rest of the World: at a projected cost of more 1.000 Billion Euros in subsidies promised by current law they did manage actually increase the spillout of CO2!Burning Thorium is the one solution that will power our world for the next 20.000 years, based on the knowledge of today.

This book was very thought provoking. I am fairly familiar with most ecological concepts. I was once a science teacher when science was simpler. But, this got me thinking in some other ways. Paradigm shifts, they call them. It was well written with vocabulary level within lay range. It is now getting a bit dated, but the ideas are still worthy, and still mostly unadopted. It should be mandatory reading for elected officials.

Lots of thought-provoking ideas, well presented. I especially like the fact that the author has proven himself willing to change his opinions as the facts present themselves.
