I've been using this book very frequently for about two years now. I had been borrowing the book from a library for a while and finally bought the book a year ago because it proved invaluable to my studies.I wanted to start off, first and foremost point out for anyone simply glancing over the reviews, this textbook is NOT a good resource for learning with no prior background or introduction to the material. This textbook IS an incredibly useful aid for people looking to supplement existing knowledge, or learn to expand on what they may all ready know. I also image if this book was used within a course that with an instructor giving a lecture, this book would be quite good additional material.I used this book as both an engineering and physics student, and outside my studies for personal projects, but never for a course that required the text. About a third of this book proved to be an excellent aid to electrical/computer engineering courses which focus on signal processing, series analysis and transform analysis. While the book doesn't specifically apply the information to that topic, it presents the mathematics used in a clear, incredibly forward way, and helped solidify knowledge on the topic that wasn't able to be presented as in depth in the time allotted by courses, or in the course textbooks.For any physics students in wave mechanics courses/quantum mechanic courses, this textbook is more than ideal. Aside from the entire chapter devoted to PDEs in quantum mechanics, the whole book contains several chapters and hundreds of pages on relevant derivations of core functions and equations, (Bessel, lagrange polynomials, etc) and approaches things you may have already known from a purely mathematical perspective, in which physics courses may have failed to fully explain. For anyone using Griffith's Introduction to Quantum mechanics textbook, this PDE book really fills in the gaps in the math in the Griffiths text.Overall, this is a great book for people already comfortable with differential equations and higher math, engineering or physics students in relevant fields, and anyone looking to add supplementary material on PDEs to their knowledge. For anyone who is not already at least slightly familiar with the topics of PDEs, fourier series analysis, transforms, etc, this book may not be for you. Many example problems are left without clear resolution, so the reader has to decide on their own how accurate they think they are in solving the examples. There are also some unclear steps taken in solving certain problems that in a few cases, create more confusion than they resolve. Aside from this, many examples ( about 75%) are in fact good and easy to follow. Based on this information, hopefully you can decide if this is a good book for you.

I was leery at first about the authors' choice to introduce applications for material not theoretically covered until later chapters (Fourier series, Bessel functions, etc.). But it didn't make the presentation less effective overall. Just made me like I was learning the dance moves before knowing where the stage was. I give it 4 instead of 5 stars because I felt it could have a number of small improvements:- better coding problems or tutorials (these are PDEs after all)- more thorough answers (yes, yes, I know this is used at universities...but university students aren't the only people who get to review books)- paperback? seriously?I felt this was a great introduction to PDEs (if you can manage to keep the cover from getting shred up or bent to heck and back).

I used this as the main text in my advanced differential equations class. I highly recommend it, it's complete in the sense that the book holds a lot of information, several semesters worth and I expect to use it as a resource in the coming years. There are many problems to work out which is always a bonus.I wish Dover would make a hardcover edition even if it was 20 bucks more.

I am an aerospace engineering graduate moving on to a masters program in the fall. I purchased this book because my degree program did not include a class geared specifically toward solving partial differential equations analytically. This book provides a great transition from solving ordinary differential equations to solving partial differential equations, as well as covering the situations that they arise in physics and engineering. I was able to follow the text on my own and answer a number of questions I had upon completion of my undergraduate studies, as well deepen my understanding of complex analysis and conformal mapping.My one complaint for this text is that there are a number of very important concepts left to the reader to discover on their own via the exercises. Most of these exercise problems walk you through the problem, but a few simply leave it up to the reader to "figure it out." This is probably the best way to learn if you have the same amount of time that the founding mathematicians did when they made such discoveries, but I would have preferred a few more explanations in the body of the text. With that said, if this book is used in the classroom, I am sure the professor and teaching assistant can make up for this discrepancy (I just wasn't fortunate enough to be in that position).

Excelent book. The best to understand the basics of PDE.

It was as expected. No difference than the new edition, even the question numbers are the same.

I'm an engineering student and this is easily one of the most student-friendly math books I've ever encountered! It's a little more narrative than most and easier to follow. I definitely recommend this!
