I would like to thank Jamie Marich for her book. I was a bit (to say the very least) overwhelmed by weekend one of the EMDR institute. Jamie's description of the four faces of an EMDR therapists was very helpful. She gave me permission to adapt it to my style of therapy. I have completed both weekend and believe the training through the EMDR institute is the best. I have had clients who were harmed by other EMDR therapists who did not adequately prepare their clients. This book helped me to shift my focus to the needs of my clients, while addressing my unspoken concerns about being able to stay rigid to the protocol. Thank you Jamie.
Excellent explanation of EMDR with the WHYs and HOWs fully explored. Marich has done exactly what she claimed: she has made EMDR simple enough for me to understand. And as unlikely as this might sound, that shifting your eyes from extreme left to extreme right about 15 times REALLY takes the unprocessed energy out of a just-won't-stop-replaying memory (stuck in the limbic part of the brain), allowing the cortex to successfully file it away as the PAST, rather than having that memory and the emotional quagmire attached to it continually replaying as though it were still in the present. (PTSD-type reactions) This book can be used for self-help but if your issues are severe, it might be better to work WITH a therapist while using these techniques. Also check out Laurel Parnell's book on "Tapping In," and Allen Botkin's book on "Induced After-Death Communication" )(which is pure EMDR with a twist).
I finished the 60 hours for my basic training and have been able to use EMDR with clients often. I discovered some of what this author talks about by trial and error in my work. This book confirmed what I found to be working already, plus expanded my knowledge exponentially. Really is a must read for EMDR providers as far as I'm concerned. My feeling is that it is best to learn the original Shapiro model first and practice it before reading this book, however, but just my opinion. I feel it helped me to get a solid understanding of the original model before expanding my technique.
I first encountered Dr. Marich through a training course in dealing with trauma. Her eloquence and thoroughness added greatly to my understanding of trauma. EMDR Made Simple speaks to you with the same authority yet brings the technique into the individual's real world experience as a therapist. We don't all see things in the same manner, and we don't always follow the orthodox method of a particular technique.Dr. Marich understands this and delivers information based on her personal life, therapeutic experiences, and formal training to make this a valuable book for any therapist with any amount of experience with or exposure to EMDR.
Since I met the EMDRI am an enthusiastic admirer of this. However, in the treatment room it sometimes seemed that something else was needed. This book gave me a broader view, patience and understanding for patients who need their pace. And those who need to strengthen the ego forces and stabilize their mental state before we run to heal the traumas. In fact, the patience and understanding I acquired following the reading of the book allowed for slow but consistent progress in previous patients.I am grateful to the author for her contribution to being even more humane in therapy.
I studied EMDR many years ago, recently had renewed interest in using it in my psychology practice. This is an excellent book that not only reviews foundational ideas about the theory and practice of EMDR psychotherapy but adds a wealth of up-to-date suggestions and explanation of new developments and variations in strategy and technique. I recommend it highly.
Just a clinical rehash of the 4 approaches, nothing new, and nothing suitable for a beginner in the field. I found the book dry, repetitive and without inspiration.
Very helpful
