#31,239 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

What a great little book. It is said that in war, the victor writes the history, and this is no less true of the American Civil War.One such example is the horror stories we hear of the Andersonville prison where thousands of imprisoned union soldiers died under horrid conditions. This book tells of northern prisons where underfed, freezing confederate prisoners died by the hundreds daily, carried out in wagons-full.Also of the thousands of union soldiers that signed up just to get paid and then desert. We see the wretchedness on both sides of this bloody, illegal affair.A must read for any Civil war buff.

I enjoyed Frank Wilkeson's day to day account of his experience in the Civil War. After finishing the book, I was curious about the author himself and did a little research to find about him. I found family pictures and a photo of him. This all added to my enjoyment.

For an unprofessional writer, the author has a good eye for the telling detail. He provides enough information to convey the daily experience of hard war. He is not attempting to relate events outside a narrow circle of his own experience, conveying the bafflement and disorientation of a civilian warrior. He betrays how calloused he has been by daily exposure to the horrors of combat and describes none of the camaraderie among soldiers often found in such accounts. Everything described is close at hand and personalized. He is impressed by the courage and skill of the Confederates. All in all, this is the account of an intelligent and somewhat detached participant in the madness of battle.

I read virtually everything that falls into the hands of the Civil War and WWII European theater. I have already done the course of the campaign of Italy (my father was medical officer of the Brazilian division that was integrated to the V American army); landing in Normandy; the operation Market Garden; the route German invasion in the south towards Ukraine; the Bulge; the crossing of the Rhine; etc. These trips are preceded by studies and mapping so you can visit the important locations of these battles or campaigns.I am very interested in the individual narratives of soldiers on both sides of a conflict and the Russian front has the particularity of having forced soldiers to fight in inhospitable environments and at unimaginable temperatures. I read a few books on the subject, but the narrative of Gunter Koschorrek has the merit of sincerity, without apologies to ideologies, countries and above all about itself. It is the narrative of an ordinary young man who one day is in uniform and doomed to kill or die. And it's hard not to think that each of us could perfectly be him.

I have been interested in the Civil War since I was a kid during the centennial in the 1960's. I have been a re-ennactor, a skirmisher and living history narrator. This is far and away the best writing about the Civil War that I have ever read. I would love to have met Wilkeson.

Every writer notices and writes about the things he notices and impressed him. I've been reading history for 40 years. Some of the views in this book are not covered very well by other authors. Two things that I found well done were his observations about bounty jumpers and the murderous warfare among poor southern whites. Well worth the read.

This is probably one of my favorite Civil War memoirs that I have read so far. It has some incredible details of the horrors of the Overland campaign, from someone who experienced it very up close. Anyone looking to learn more about the Civil War, and what it was like for the foot soldiers, I would highly recommend giving this a read.

The author tended to be opinionated about the officers, not without reason at times. He seemed to think everything about the fighting man was good while officers were nearly worthless, except for Grant. Considering it was Grant who gave many of the orders he criticized, that seems strange

I have read 4-5 books on The Gambia, and Phillip Briggs is the most comprehensive, informative and simultaneously entertaining. He brings the country to life and the fact that he has lived much of his life in Africa gives him a perspective that many authors cannot replicate. Briggs's work is a meld of academic work and travelogue that is refreshing and inviting. 5 stars for sure!

I read this after watching the Stars television series, which was supposed to be a prelude to Treasure Island. Given license the stories matched up pretty well. As far the the book itself goes, it is a young adult novel written as a period piece during a past era, with period language and period moires. That said, as a 50 plus year old, I had no trouble understanding it or enjoying it. I wonder though if the current generation of young adults can relate. I hope so because, if they can't they are missing out.

I reread this book to reconnect with Long John Silver. I am a great fan of "Black Sails"'which is produced by STARZ on T. V., a most enjoyable show! This is a great read for any age. The characters are wonderfully written. Do yourself a favor and read this book even if you already read it as a child...it brings back some good memories!

Excellent story from my youth. Great to read again. Free flowing story that takes you on a voyage of adventure. An ice cream desert topped off with Long John. All the stuff that leads to an early...... Ah shiver me timbers.!

This book is a classic that has been reviewed innumerable times. It is a great read on the Kindle app and the illustrations are a nice addition.

Fun adventure of a boy and treasure, that's why it's a classic. It's not over written and the dialogue is right on the RI.

Had to read this again after watching Black Sails, touted as the prequel of to this book. I'm sorry the series didn't continue with this story as it might have brought in some of the other characters I liked, Bonney, jack Rackham, etc. I liked the book, as I did when I read it many many years ago.

My kids and grandkids love me to read this to them. It's bit dated though, with terms and situations that even adults these days don't know. I find I have to explain a lot of things to them.

A great read, tells of good and not so good men and some a combination of the two. I’ve not read Stevenson’s biography, but I think I will just to see how he developed the background for his writings.

I as looking forward to reading this book, having read all the other books in the "Night Huntress" universe. Sadly. I felt the story was padded and drawn out to the point of being annoying. It isn't a bad book, just not a very good book. Way too much time is spent describing the waves of emotion the heroine, Leila feels emanating off of Vlad; and the only emotions he seems to have are anger, love, and a rare, tiny bit of sadness. Most of the characters are largely flat and those with the most dimension are not the major players. The character, Ian, is always interesting in this universe, and I am glad to read that Ms. Frost's next book set in this world centers around him. It is a shame that she turn Vlad the Impaler into Vlad the Pissy Alpha Male, especially when he was interesting in previous books.

3.5There are chunks in the book that I really like, others that held very little interest, and things I want to know more about. There are also things that I both loved and hated- as in the same thing falls into both categories for different reasons. It's not my favorite of the series and I can't say it really met expectations but it is worth getting in my opinion.Positives:Vlad not being in complete control. I really liked the struggle he had to go through and the slightly more vulnerable side you see because of it.Veritas: For the little part she shows up for. I like her. Totally called it.Ian: Beginning- when he shows up and the end of the book.Easter Egg of Bones and Kat's cabin. That was kind of cool.Lelia: More independent, confident, and in general stronger.Meeting Lelia's other family and getting into the history of her abilities.Gretchen making the change. I think she'll make an interesting one and I'd like to see her get at least one book or a novella.Gretchen in general. I really liked her small part in this book.Maximus having some attitude. No so positive:Only Lelia's viewpoint. I've had that complaint since the beginning so it's no surprise I have it with this one as well. While I found some of the magical elements to the book interesting, there were chunks like the bar, I was rather meh about. The middle of the story in general was rather difficult for me.Ian. I love Ian as a character. In every other book Frost has written where he's made an appearance, large or small, I have loved him. He's one of my favorite characters and there were parts that I liked-see positives. However, the middle section of all the introduction to magic stuff, etc, he just....I don't know. It just didn't feel right to me. Too over the top maybe. Beginning and End, Total Ian. Something about the middle though.Lelia: Being more than a little hypocritical when it comes to Gretchen. She kicks up a storm when Vlad makes choices for her but she goes and mind wipes her sister. Even though the intention to protect is good it was wrong on many levels. I was applauding Maximus calling it out too though I wish he'f gonr a little further with it. She also got a little....self-centered, holier than thou. Not a lot but boy did it grate the nerves when it showed. What the bad guys ultimately wanted: Made me want to bang my head into the wall a little bit. How Vlad handled it too.Not much time with Samir. I liked him in the last book.I liked Gretchen stepping up for Leila, liked Lelia wanting to protect her sister, didn't like Lelia mind zapping her, didn't like that Lelia was willing to let Gretchen do it in the end just to spare Vlad the heartbreak. What I want to know:All right, so Gretchen had no interest for me at all for the first two books. Book 3, I liked the small little bit of her and Samir. This book I actually really liked her and I now have a burning desire to know more. I want to know if her crying was about the thought of Samir being under threat Is there something there? Maximus seemed like a potential romance in some moments.I am officially interested in Ian's story though I do hope we get his perspective, not just the Verita's. While similar to a previous story, I am interested to see how Frost makes the changes and expands. I hope he gets more than just one book. One final note. This may have been addressed and I just missed it but, if the hex could be transferred to the blood relative, why not give Gretchen vamp blood, then transfer to Gretchen, Gretchen 'dies', then comes back as a vamp. It might be that the nature of the hex doesn't allow for it but I don't think it was ever considered, just that the transfer would have to wait if she was already a vamp so that it wouldn't be during the blood craze. Perhaps I'm forgetting something though.

Welcome back, Jeaniene Frost. I hear you've been traveling a rocky road, so, it's great you're back on the scene. I like your books. I wanted to like this one.I saw Into The Fire on Ilona Andrews's blog, and on Charlaine Harris's blog. They mentioned its release, but they did not promote it. Maybe they are too busy to read it? I read it. Actually, I read most of it, and skimmed the final three or four chapters set in Belarus. Or was it Poland? It was about the sixth? seventh? whirlwind location change and I lost track of where we all were. Some locale with black quartz caves. The pacing was unusual for this series, frenetic from the opening scene to the last. Chase, fight, argue, repeat. Chaos, fire, electricity, deception, disguises, explosions. Broken windows and doors. The last two pages were calm, gentle, romantic and sweet. By that point, I felt as if I had earned them. The plot: Leila, a fun young American woman, recently turned into a vampire, pals around day after day with horny, ancient European male vampires, trying to find a way to disconnect from and rescue Vlad's whiny stepson (another ancient vampire), who is being held hostage by magical necromancers.Lelia's sister, Gretchen, for each book a reliably annoying character, remarkably becomes an even bigger headache. (Really Jeaniene? I choose indomitable Marty for eternity over Gretchen, all day long.)Vlad the Charismatic seems exhausted by his string of violent misfortunes over a horrible year. He shows up as the character we used to care about in the last two pages. Finally. My favorite chapters covered Leila's Cherokee heritage. I wish that had been the plot focus of the book. The sex scenes did not seem to interest the author too much. (They sure did not interest me). If the publisher is contractually requiring three scenes per book, well, checked that box.Speaking of the publisher: shame on you, Avon. This book needed an editor that cared more about helping Jeaniene write a great finale for this series than meeting a production deadline. She deserves (so much) better. So do the readers.

PreSchool-Grade 2?A variation on the familiar Russian folktale. Here, two rabbits are surprised to find an enormous carrot growing in their garden. At harvest time, they solicit help from a variety of friendly barnyard neighbors. Storytime participants will eagerly chime in with the repeated, "But the carrot stayed put. It wouldn't come out." It is finally Lester the Mouse who lends the last measure of muscle power needed to burst the carrot from the begrudging soil. The most festive scene in the story is a double-page spread depicting the carrot feast in which the animals eat "every bit of that enormous carrot until it was all gone." A fascinating menagerie crowds around a circular table groaning with every type of carrot delicacy imaginable. Vagin's contribution is fresh and energetic, told with vocabulary that is as lush and varied as the hues of his framed illustrations. The animals not only pull and tug, they heave and ho, grunt and groan, team and tow, stretch and sway, and holler and haul. With the creatures dressed as rural folk, the pictures have the feel of a Victorian Easter card, but with brilliant garden colors. Enchanting details will captivate readers who may be beyond the simplicity of the tale. The presentation is enhanced by the same large format as Vagin's The Nutcracker Ballet (Scholastic, 1995). A salad bar of springtime delights.?Lisa S. Murphy, formerly at Dauphin County Library System, Harrisburg, PACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Ages 5^-7. Vagin retells "The Enormous Turnip," pitting a cast of farm animals against a more familiar vegetable. When rabbits Daisy and Floyd find the gargantuan root in their garden, they try to pull it up but can't--not even with the help of Mabel the cow, Henry the goat, and Claire cat and her tractor. At last, little Lester mouse joins the string, and that does the trick. The artist clothes his menagerie in comfortable, colorful, modern dress and puts it in a sunny, rural landscape lush with flowers. Made into cake, soup, tarts, pie, cookies, and ice cream, the great carrot feeds a crowd at an outdoor party, after which Daisy and Floyd lie down for a nap, not noticing the tree-size tomato plant behind them. It's a classic tale about the value of cooperation, in a fresh, cheerful garb. John Peters

The book was in pretty good condition. Except for one little stamp on the front hut it didn't matter cause the rest of the book was in great condition. Seems like new to me. I have always loved teaching my class with this book. It's fun and we get to act it out too!

Just what I expected, thanks

The girls and I enjoyed reading this book on Easter Sunday eve. They enjoyed the story line and the illustrations have so many details and bright colors! Even after we were done with the story, we found ourselves discovering new details on each drawing.

good

Love this story on the same theme as the Ukrainian story The Mitten.

This oversized (12x9 inch) paperback has 30 pages of beautifully detailed pencil-and-watercolor drawings of a farming neighborhood presented one day with the problem of a carrot that was Enormous. The farmers (a couple of rabbits) try to pull it up. No luck. It is just too big. Then their neighbor (a cow) offers to help. Not enough. One-by-one, their other friends come by to help out and when the last, smallest one (a mouse) joins in ... they succeed! Then, they have their reward: an enormous feast together.I had enjoyed this book cover to cover before I realized why it sounded familiar: it is the story of The Little Red Hen, except in reverse. In the Little Red Hen, the neighbors refuse to help and then end up with nothing; in The Enormous Carrot, they all pitch in and are rewarded. This "moral" is not heavyhanded and your child will not notice. Let them simply enjoy the story, the talking animals, and the illustrations!

Fun story for read alouds. I read this to a Head Start class and they were clapping when the animals finally got the carrot out. I loved how Vagin added Lester the mouse and the subtle message that followed.

This book was my favorite when I was a child. I could read really well when I was young, so it's pretty impressive that I had a favorite picture book. The thing I liked about it the most was the picture at the end, a two page spread that has so much to look at that I'd stare at it for hours!!! I think any kid would like this book, unless they just don't like books in general.
