I have read 4-5 books on The Gambia, and Phillip Briggs is the most comprehensive, informative and simultaneously entertaining. He brings the country to life and the fact that he has lived much of his life in Africa gives him a perspective that many authors cannot replicate. Briggs's work is a meld of academic work and travelogue that is refreshing and inviting. 5 stars for sure!
