I originally purchased this book for $3.00 in an outlet store. I work closely with a risk management team at work and wanted a reference book to help me understand the basics. After I was asked to help develop better better risk management practices, this book began to pay off. I purchased the kindle version so I could have a copy with me when I needed it. I use it frequently.

This book really helped get me set up with a solid basis. Better - more complete and easier to digest- than anything else out there. I work in a big financial company, too, and this helped shed light on how the concepts fit together. Too bad my management didn't read it before the crisis!

In 1903, Theodore Roosevelt read John Muir’s book on the Sierra Nevada, which ended with a plea for government to save the vanishing forests. The president asked Muir to take him camping in the Yosemite wilderness, and two months later, Roosevelt followed his knowledgeable guide into the mountains, through the valley, and among the giant sequoia trees. Returning to Washington, the president pushed to pass the laws that created national parks and forests as well as wildlife sanctuaries. Mostly non-fiction recounting of events that brought John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt together to form the concept of the National Park System. Our son used it for a 1st grade book report and the kids all listened very intently to the story. We love to play hard in the outdoors and hiking in our National Parks is one thing we greatly enjoy as a family. It was nice to be able to teach our kids about why they were created and how fortunate we are to have such a great resource.

This book is one of my favorite books for teaching environmental activism to children and parents. It is true and it captures the reader's imagination about John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt's camping trip in Yosemite. It is also beautifully illustrated and pleasing to the eye. This book is a real adventure to read and share.

This is a great book to teach your kids about the National Parks. I got this to keep in the new RV and my kids frequently choose this for their bedtime story.

President Theodore Roosevelt was an outdoorsman, everyone knows that. But did you know he once went camping with John Muir in Yosemite? Why? Because Muir was a famous naturalist, and Roosevelt wanted to know more about America's wilderness. At stake was the potential creation of national parks and forests. The two men traveled by horseback and were caught in a spring snowstorm, but they had a wonderful time, and President Roosevelt worked very hard afterwards to preserve the nation's natural treasures. One word of caution: though notes about the trip were available, they did not include sufficient dialogue, and the author did invent fireside conversations between the two men. I think she's done a marvelous job of writing this important, little-known story; just be sure your students or children understand the ways in which it is, as Rosenstock says in her very helpful author's note, "based in truth." Veteran picture book creator Mordecai Gerstein illustrates the account with his loose and appealing watercolor style.

This is a wonderful - and true - story for children interested in the national parks. The adults in our family have also enjoyed the charming writing and illustrations. I would highly recommend this book to kick off travel anywhere in the country.

Cute little informative story. Young readers of all ages will be drawn to this book about John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt and learning about the Camping Trip that Changed America. It explains it so the youngest of readers will be waiting to turn that next page and the older readers will want to find out what becomes of Teddy's and John's friendship. This is a time of year when it is pleasant to curl up in a cozy spot to read a good book, and you have found that book for your child. There is something about the way this writer writes that keeps the kids reading. I saw her at a school visit and she was WONDERFUL. Kept the kids engaged for the whole presentation. Really a good time.It is a beautiful picture book,illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein, a Caldecott Award winner in 2004. This is her 3rd book. Her other good reads are Fearless and The Littlest Mountain...Buy one for your kids, grandkids, or your child's teacher so they can share with the school library. A great teacher's gift for the end of the year. What teacher wouldn't love a book to share instead of a coffee mug or candy? You won't be disappointed. I wasn't.

I got the audio book and I felt sorry for the competent reader because the book is very poorly written. Even the base concepts the author attempts to teach are mangled by the writing.This isn't about learning, it's about getting grades, the author makes that abundantly clear.Beyond the tangled mess of writing, the content diverges instantly from the title. So this isn't just poorly written, it's low integrity.

Not exceptionally well, or even reasonably well written or edited, but the premise is correct. No where in my entire run of schooling, from the first day to the last, did anyone ever say ‘this is how to study’. It was always ‘read this, read that, we’ll be having a test on Monday-go to it.’ Studying and learning are both skills that can be learned, improved, and honed. Another valid point mentioned early in the ebook was that it’s on you to make it happen. Those skills won’t just happen to you or for you; the amount of effort you put in will be reflected in the reward you get out. The ebook itself might have been more effective for my tastes if it had gone through a thorough edit process to make it easier to read and clean up some of the more gross errors.

This book helped change the way I looked at learning. Worth reading if you want to improve your learning methods.

These mantras work incredibly well and very quickly.I've had this book for a while now and have used it frequently and with great success.I'm no longer surprised that magic works and definitly not that Baal Kadmon.s magic works I have never missed with his excellent books and this book retains the high quality.

I love Baal Kadmon's writing. I got this book as much for the rituals as for the background on Kali. His writing style is crisp, clean and to the point. He can teach in a few pages what other authors spend chapters trying to explain.I highly recommend this book for your introduction to the Goddess Kali.

There are typos and formatting errors throughout the whole book, including all over the back cover. It's so extremely bad that it makes it hard to even stand reading it! The cover itself is extremely cheap and the image on the front is blurry. The whole thing looks very unprofessional, like a 9-year-old slapped it together. I can't believe I paid 8 bucks for this.When you get to the part about rituals to Kali, it quickly becomes obvious that this was copied and pasted from a website and not edited at all. Tools for performing the rituals are unclear, as they are listed as links (not URLs) and the ingredients and so forth are not given (As in "Kali Goddess Blend" incense, for example.). The rituals themselves are all practically identical, with just the mantras and candle colors switched around. The astrological reasons for why certain rituals are done on certain days are not explained. That being said, I do think the rituals are effective and can provide a goodfoundation for a beginner.I can't say this text is completely useless, but the formatting issues and lack of detail leave much to be desired. I would be thrilled if a revised, meatier, and more professionally typed and printed second edition was put out.

I have been a servant of Kali since 1990, and have used many Mahakali mantras to great effect over the years, but I still learned some things from this book, and I recommend it to everyone that I work with whether thery are a student or formal Apprentice. I just wish I could print it out.

I have only done Kali's mantra a few times but they always have left me with a lot of energy. You can feel her presence with these mantras.

While the book does have what seem to be some essential Kali mantras, and descriptions of traditional rituals - even going as far to loosely translate some of them or tell you what each mantra could be used for - the actual execution of the book is very poor. The cover is extremely pixelated (which is not really that important but felt it needed to be noted) and the grammar/spelling/punctuation within is honestly terrible. Multiple errors. Honestly, this wouldn't be that big of a deal to me but since mantras are so important to recite in an exact manner, the copious errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar make me weary as to if I am really reading and reciting the mantra correctly.I will use this as a loose reference, at best.

I really like all of Baal Kadmon's books. They are very informative and to the point.

This series will be okay if they softpedal the teen romance tedium.

This was such a cute book and fun read! I enjoyed that there were two mysteries to solve as it kept things more interesting. I’m a tad history obsessed, so I was very delighted to see some very exciting historical aspects brought into the story. A great middle grade read!

Another delightful novel from the talented Heather Vogel Frederick! The second book in the new Pumpkin Falls mystery series is everything a reader could hope for. As usual, Frederick provides an engaging story with multi-dimensional characters. Any reader who loved the Mother-Daughter Book Club series and was left wishing for more will find that this and Absolutely Truly will give them a new story that is as satisfying as MDBC. This book makes me want to move to New Hampshire.

I feel this author has important things to say to help those with breathing problems. However, if you get one book of his, you have essentially almost the same things in each one over and over, so choose wisely. I have non-smoker's COPD type issues and doctors insist you can't do much about it if you have to be on O2. However, just know that diet plays a HUGE part. I radically changed my diet and it has made a profound change in my ability to breathe. I dropped wheat, meat, dairy, soy, sugar, white flour, rice, oats, barley. Well there you go...almost everything in the store and everything you love to eat. I did add grain alternatives of spelt, amaranth and quinoa. Just changing my diet has enabled me to cut my O2 almost in half, from 3 continuous to 1.5 continuous when at rest and 2 when doing lite walking and 3 when doing fast walking for medium distances. I can now do the 6 minute walk test on 6 continuous and STAY over 84 WITHOUT stopping!!!! This is after 2 months on the diet. The diet is not his suggestion, just to let others out there know other things do help. As far as the author's info, I am a "3", pretty bad really. So right now I am just using the 'pursed lip' breathe-out technique when I feel I need to build up O2 in my blood to help my muscles at this lower level of O2. This one technique helps me more than anything besides the diet change. Haven't been doing anything else yet since he says if your level is that low, to be extremely cautious. So I am working on diet right now, loosing some weight and using the "lung exerciser" machine my dr gave me (now he gives it to me, why not at the beginning?)--like the frolof gizmo. Reading this book has given me some hope that I can get off this O2 dog-leash.

The writing was confusing. Our Russian doctor shoudl have collaborated with an Author who speaks English.There was some good information.

It is interesting to note that such a simple test devised by a Russian Doctor (Professor Buteyko) could actually provide so much information in regards to the health of an organism. That test being the Morning Control Pause. Getting a high control pause means higher oxygen levels in the body and thus an ability to be able to be resistant to disease (at its simplest). The author Mr. Rahkimov has gone into great detail with many references to substantiate his work relating to the causes behind disease and how to eliminate cystic fibrosis (through increasing breathing rate to normal (4/L Minute). My query has to be why this method has not receive more scientific justification in Western Medicine and why it is has not received any support from Western practioners? Though I am sure that each case varies I would also be interested to know the average time frame for overcoming cystic fibrosis, using the methods described in this book.

My brother bought us this book...What I know about health is that all disease can be helped. "There is no such thing as an incurable disease, but at times incurable patients..." -Dr. Christopher. Many people choose to be victims in there own health struggles. Everyone is welcome to go to a hospital and take the "band aid method" of using different medications that cause more health problems in the long run. In order for Dr Artour Rakhimov suggestions to work, you must follow his directions and do the work! This is your body, and your health. Your body didn't get sick over night, it was a process, just as breathe retraining is also a process. If you truly want to get better, set your intentions high because health is up to the individual. I'm so thankful for this book and teachings. I'm learning even more on the normalbreathing.com web site.

A good book about Cystic Fibrosis

We live in England and our 4 yo daughter has cystic fibrosis. A friend sent me a link to this book, which I tried to buy for my Kindle - but alas, for some reason Amazon won't let you buy it if your Kindle is registered to amazon.co.uk as opposed to amazon.com - HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

How has Russia changed anything CF related over the past 30 years, considering the first CF center wasn't built until 1989?How could Russia possibly changed the life expectancy of those with CF to over 70 considering the first case of CF wasn't diagnosed in Russia until 1967 (this person would be 46 years old today). As of 1996, the average life expectancy of a child in Russia with CF was 14 (Source: Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine: [...]Just because someone produces an ebook does not make the information accurate!

What I really enjoyed about Untouched was the message it sends, about not caring too much about the bad things that happen to one in life, but more about where we go and what we do going forward, how we can make things better using the God given tools we're provided, not regretting that everything isn't exactly as we would have liked. For Sienna, not knowing where her mother is or who she can trust, confrontations with even more dangerous enemies...all make her frequent attitude problems somewhat forgivable.(even though I wanted to shake her sometimes,saying " Not everything is about you.") While Sienna is still a bit too full of teenage angst, she's learning to not pity herself and to fight against that feeling, even if it seems that the entire world's against her and that the foundation of her life keeps shifting.(But she is only 17 and I love her character). In this book, Sienna learns that things won't get better by themselves, and that she's the only one who can make things better... and more importantly,that she really isn't alone... She has Zack and she has others who care about her.I really enjoy Robert Crane's writing style and the snapish wit that he attributes to his main character Sienna. She can be a bit mean, but there are times when I can't help laughing to myself because the character on the receiving end deserves it. And then there are times they don't, and it frustrates me that she has no seeming ability to curb her tongue.The story is very action packed... almost too much action at times. The Poor girl keeps getting beaten, burned and she can't catch a break. (Luckily, she heals quickly from her injuries each time.)I really enjoyed the direction Robert Crane took the story in this book. Lots of intrigue, a bit of romance with Zack, heaps of X-Men like superpowers and meeting her aunt.... I love it.Jack Murphy

While I did enjoy the story line of the 'Girl in the box' series, the author has some grammar and spelling issues throughout all the books. I took off a star rating for that because it made the book more difficult to read. Just when you become fully engrossed into the visual images the story portrays, the grammar and/or spelling issues appear and break the reader out of the submersion. Several times there were sentences that seemed to be two thoughts in one as if he changed how he wanted to write that particular line mid-sentence and just kept going. Maybe Robert J. Crane just needs a better editor, proof-reader?

This segment of the story continues Sienna's introduction into a vastly wider world. One of the major struggles for her is obviously going to be dealing with her "gift" and how hard it is to finally be released from the captivity of her home only to find that she is even more limited. She must find a way to come to terms with the fact that she will never be the girl in the red dress out on a date, holding hands with a boyfriend. Touching is death and she will be forever on the outside looking in.There is more pressure put on her in this book. Pressure to join the Directorate, to follow directions, to think before acting. In the midst of all this she is trying to deal with the guilt of people having died because of her actions, as well as the actions of Wolfe, who has taken up residence in her head.There are still people who are looking to snatch her up, and they are brutal. When you heal from wounds that would kill normal humans then the fighting takes on a whole new dimension. I still think this author is amazingly good at constructing fight and action scenes.The story moves at a quick pace and, like the first book, left me wanting more.

Addicted!Okay, so our hero is a snarky self centered teenager. I hope she grows out of it! But I really enjoy the witty banter. The action is well written, and the overall arc is intriguing. The author gives you just enough information to keep you guessing and reading.Well worth the time and price to read. There is a large cast of characters that you just want to learn more about. Even the "bad guys" are interesting!This is a feel good story with some really dark parts, may not be suitable for sensitive young readers. It does touch on traumatic topics so I would recommend parents give it a whirl before handing it over to younger readers. I only say this because I have nieces and my sister has chastised me for recommending some books to them that upset them.I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys some good combat scenes and likes a plot that always keeps you guessing!

An entertaining, well-written and informative book - suitable for folks with little or no background in math, but also for those who know a fair bit of math (you will still learn a lot, I suspect). Amusingly written, with a pleasing authorial voice.One serious problem with the Kindle edition: the extensive and informative notes at the end of the book are not properly linked within the body of the text - no reference links or footnotes numbers at all! So, you don't know which topics in a given chapter have notes, and you don't even know about the existence of said notes until you stumble on them at the end. So, go for the paper edition, *not* the Kindle edition.Whoever does the technical editing for Kindle editions of non-fiction is doing a rotten job - several other books I have purchased for the Kindle have had similar issues. I am tempted to only use the Kindle for fiction, not for non-fiction.Too bad Amazon doesn't allow one to rate the content separately from a rating on the digitization for the Kindle; I gave 5 stars for content, but would have rated the technical aspects of the Kindle at best 2 stars....

I just want to address one matter of how the kindle ebook looks. This book has lots of illustrations and formulas -- as you would expect for a popular approach to math. I'm reading this on a 9 inch color tablet (reading on the kindle app for android). Everything renders beautifully. Perhaps the rendering isn't as good on e-ink devices, but I'd bet that the real issue is screen size. (i.e., a 6 inch device probably would be a struggle to read). There are a lot of graphics and photos; it's a pretty book, but because of the large file size, you might consider removing your local copy and keeping it on the cloud when you're done.

A few times I've seen postings on Facebook where people are proud of the fact that they "got through another day without using math". I'm amused but a little sad that they think math is unnecessary in day-to-day life. I wonder if they really didn't use math or did it without thinking of it as math.Or is it true that since they don't have a background in math they just ignore the problems in their lives where math could help Now, I confess I was an English major and ignored math and the sciences; but I've come to undertstand that more math would have been helpful.Steven Strogatz shows us the basic concepts of numbers and math, building from the simple: Sesame Street characters counting fish, to the mind boggling: some infinities are larger than others.We first learn about the power of numbers when we go from calling out "fish, fish, fish" for each fish we see to grouping them together in the abstract idea of "three fish". Numbers are abstract ideas we use to stand in so we can easily measure and compare things. Once we build a set of relationship rules (addition, subtraction) we continue to develop methods of relationships. For example we build fractions as "ratios of integers - hence teir technical name, rational numbers." (p 29). These rules continue to build upon one another and take us through algebra and geometry to calculus. As an example Strogatz demonstrates that adding "all the consecutive odd numbers, starting from 1: The sums above, remarkably, always turn out to be perfect squares" (p10).My biggest takeaway from the book is that when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. You can only use the tools in your belt to solve the problems you encounter. And worse if you do use the tools in your belt you may get the wrong answer. Or worse yet; you may have the correct tool set but use them dishonestly to misdirect people - those people like me - who didn't study enough math.An example of that is statistics, where figures lie and liers figure. Most of us have at least a passing understanding of normal distributions (bell curves). They "can be proven to arise whenever a large number of mildly random effects of similar size, all acting independently, are added together. And many things are like that." (p 178). Many, but not all. "[P]lenty of phenomena deviate from this pattern yet still manage to follow a pattern of their own." (p 178). But we are more comfortable with the normal distributions and have the tools (the mean average) to work with them. In Power-law distributions the "modes, medians, and means do not agree because of the skewed, asymmetrical shapes of their L-curves. President Bush made use of this property when he stated that his 2003 tax cuts had saved families an average of $1,586 each. Though that is technically correct, he was conveniently referring to the mean rebate, a figure that averaged in the whopping rebates of hundreds of thousands of dollars received by the richest 0.1 percent of the population. The tail on the far right of the income distribution is known to follow a pwoer law, and in situations like this, the mean is a misleading statistic to use because it's far from typical. Most families, in fat got less that %650. The median was a lot less than the mean." (p. 180)I've been intimidated by calculus but Strogatz does an effective job of making it approachable - you won't learn calculus from the book but you'll get a glimmer of understanding. If we want to find the area of a circle we start by fitting a square inside and calculate its area; then turn it into an 8 sided figure - like slices of a pizza - and calculating its area we get closer yet. And so on as the number of pie slices approaches infinity.Strogatz wraps things up with the theory of infinite sets using the illustration of the Hilbert Hotel which is always full but there is always room for one more. I can't do it justice here but he shows how the infinity of the real numbers between 0 and 1 is bigger than the infinity of whole numbers. Whaaaat?Finally I became acquainted with the "recreational mathemusician" Vi Hart through this book. She is a video illustrator who does some marvelous work demonstrating mathematic concepts. Even if you don't read this book (which you totally should), check out Vi Harts story of Wind and Mr. Ug; a couple of two dimensional beings who live on a transparent Möbius strip.

This is an enjoyable read, even for the  math phobic. The formulas and math symbols are kept to a minimum. Just when you start feeling a bit overwhelmed, the chapter comes to its conclusion.I have found that if you want to bring a conversation to an end, suggest mathematics as a topic. Too many people are insecure about their math capabilities and simply don't think math can be fun or interesting. Reading this book might change that attitude. Certainly 259 pages of large text and big margins isn't too much of commitment.One example from the book that got me thinking and sharing: the bagel cut that produces 2 chain-linked halves. With this inspiration, I constructed a 360 degree möbius strip and cut it down the middle. Then I constructed a regular 180 degree möbius strip and cut it at the 1/3 width of the strip. Fascinating results! That is what a good science/math book will do for you: get you to try new things on your own and pat yourself on the back for what you have "discovered."

I found this book to be a fun discussion of many topics in mathematics. As a mathematician wannabe (kinda late in the game for me) my only issue was that it left some of the theorems unproven just at it was getting interesting. But I also understand that he was aiming at folks with not much more than high-school math.Hi notes are really good, though I wish he had them at the end of every chapter rather than at the end of the book.Chapter 26 was a GREAT intro to group theory.I think he could have added a chapter or two on some games that generated mathematical interest, like the 15-puzzle that was popular with kids, or Rubik's Cube or Instant Insanity? Anyone remember that last one? In high school I saw an article about that game in a copy of American Mathematical Monthly. Then there is the famous riddle of the Kronenberg bridges, the one that kicked off the field of topology.OK, that's a few missed items.
